Foods and Vitamins that help the hair’s health

How do we maintain healthy hair when we live such busy lives? That's a great question! By simply adding foods comprised of properties known to help hair health and growth, you may see an improvement in your body and your hair.  New England Associates knows that vitamins and minerals can make a difference. Which is why we offer our own line of products, HairStart® to help! Here are our top picks for optimum hair health of vitamins and minerals!

·       Vitamins (A, B, C, E)

·       Minerals (Copper and Zinc, Sulphur, Iron)

·       Protein

·       Oils (Rosemary and Coconut)

Vitamins

Vitamin A is important to the body because not only does it promote the growth of cells and tissues, but it is also necessary for the body to produce sebum — a natural oil that hydrates the scalp and hair strands. Vitamin A is produced by beta-carotene, found in yellow or orange fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, mango, carrots and squash.

Vitamin B comes in a number of varieties...So, which one(s) should you choose? Necessary for ultimate hair health are Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12 and Biotin — a water-soluble vitamin. These vitamins work together to benefit your hair, skin and even nails. B Vitamins can be found in whole grains, poultry, eggs and vegetables.

Vitamin C supports the production of collagen,  strengthening the hair follicles and blood vessels which supports the growth of healthier hair. Vitamin C also contributes to iron absorption, which helps in overall well being and beauty. Vitamin C can be found in foods such as oranges, broccoli, papaya, and blueberries.

Vitamin E and Vitamin C "protect" each other and are most effective when consumed together. Vitamin E protects the hair from the sun's harmful rays by assisting in the production of the nourishing protein, Keratin. It also increases blood vessels’ circulation to the scalp, supporting hair growth. Supporters of Vitamin E are almonds, avocado, kale, and spinach.

Minerals

Copper and Zinc also work together, and aid in absorption. Zinc supports the production of new cells (hair cells). Therefore, a lack of zinc can lead to a dry scalp, potentially leading to hair loss or thinning. Copper contributes to hair thickness and color of the hair, preventing a possible premature graying of the hair. However, these two have to be consumed in moderation because too much zinc interferes in copper’s absorption and too much copper is toxic to the body. A great way to consume a balanced portion of both minerals are nuts, peanuts, lentils and beans.

Another mineral important for hair health is Sulphur. This mineral is known as the “nature’s beauty mineral”. Containing multiple body benefiting properties, sulphur helps support blood circulation,  hair growth, ease skin inflammation, and assists in the absorption of vitamins. Although, present in the body, sulphur can only be obtained through good sources are protein rich foods, milk, garlic, seaweed and brussels sprouts.

Iron plays a vital role in hair health because it carries oxygen to the hair. An oxygen deficiency in the blood can affect the hair’s growth cycle and therefore increase the risk for hair loss. Some options for iron intake are meats in general, spinach, lentils, and broccoli.

Protein

More than ninety percent of our hair is made of protein, so having a diet with protein is essential for healthy hair. Protein can be found in meats in general, eggs, legumes and nuts.

Oils

Two oils that nourish, and give a healthier look to hair are rosemary oil and coconut oil. Rosemary oil can be used when shampooing, just add a few drops of it while washing the hair and then repeat the process. Coconut oil can be used as a hair mascara and should be applied before showering or before going to bed for the best results.

Feed Your Follicles For Optimum Hair Health

Image

When people hear the words “hair loss,” many link such loss to a genetic factor or skin disease such as alopecia. But, what many people don't realize is that some cases of hair loss may be due to rapid weight loss, hormonal imbalances, menopause, pregnancy, certain medications, chemotherapy, chronic stress, poor scalp circulation and even nutrition.

At New England Associates care about your hair health and understand the affects hair loss can have on your daily life. We recommend speaking to a hair loss expert at NEA to receive an accurate diagnosis of the cause of hair loss, but in the meantime it's important to understand other factors that may influence or stimulate loss. Now, let’s take a look at the list we’ve created for you!

  • a.       Vitamin A: This vitamin promotes the growth of healthy cells and tissues. Also, it is necessary for the body to make sebum, which is an oily substance produced by our hair and it serves as a natural conditioner to keep our scalp and hair hydrated. Add yellow/orange or green colored vegetables or fruits rich in beta-carotene to your diet. These foods produce vitamin A. Take your pick of carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, winter squash, mango, spinach, and broccoli!

  • b.      Vitamin B: B-lieve it or not, this complex vitamin is chock full of the same vitamins that naturally occur in the foods you already consume — giving your body an extra boost of energy. They also aid  in the formation of red blood cells. B vitamins can be found in foods such as pork, poultry, fish, wholegrains, eggs, vegetables, and soy beans.

  • c.       Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen, which supports hair follicles and strengthens the capillaries that supply the scalp and hair. Vitamin C's antioxidant properties increases iron absorption, allowing iron to be rapidly absorbed and used by the body. Good sources of vitamin C are blueberries, kiwi, oranges, broccoli, sweet potatoes, strawberries, and papaya.

  • d.      Vitamin E: This vitamin has the ability to boost circulation to the scalp and it protects the hair from the damaging effects of the sun. Vitamin E is necessary to nourish the hair and to prevent breakage as it helps the body in producing Keratin, which strengthens the hair. Vitamin C and E protect each other and therefore are more effective when consumed together.  Vitamin E ambassadors include almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, avocados, and kale.

2.      Sulphur - “Nature’s Beauty Mineral”: Sulphur is known as the “nature’s beauty mineral” because it is able to reduce skin inflammation, helps on hair growth and also on blood circulation, which is crucial to a good health. This mineral is abundant in our skin, hair and nails and it is present in all cells in our body. Sulphur also plays an important role in the absorption of several B vitamins, including B5 and B7, which are thought to help aid in hair health. Some symptoms of a lack of sulphur are hair loss, brittle, dry hair and nails, and dry skin. This mineral can only be obtained through diet sources such as protein rich foods, eggs, milk and meat. Our options for vegetarians are garlic, brussels sprouts, seaweed, onions and kale.

3.      Pump Up YourProtein: If you didn’t already know, more than 90 percent of our hair is made of protein. Yes, Protein! Therefore, it’s crucial to pack your diet with plenty of protein for strong, healthy hair. If your diet lacks the protein your body requires, this may cause hair loss. Great protein foods include meats (fish, turkey, chicken, beef), eggs, and dairy products. For vegetarians opt for legumes and nuts.

4.      Make Sure Your Iron Intake is Right: If the iron levels on the body fall below what is required by it to function properly, you are likely to have anemia, which is nothing more than low iron levels in the body. Iron carries oxygen to the hair, and lack of iron means lack of oxygen and that affects the hair’s growth cycle. An affected hair growth cycle may be causing hair loss because you’re loosing more hair than it is being replaced. To remedy the situation, eat animal products such as red meats, chicken, fish, lentils, spinach, broccoli and kale.

5.      Don’t Forget About Copper and Zinc: Did you know that copper can prevent hair loss and it also contributes to hair thickness? Although, only a small amount of copper is required by the body, it is crucial that you consume the right amount of it. Copper is also said to prevent the graying of hair and therefore it intensifies the hair color to make you look even better. But beware; the exaggerated consumption of copper can be toxic, so watch out! Another mineral that works together with copper is zinc. Zinc helps on the production of new cells, including hair cells and the lack of it may cause hair loss and a dry scalp. Note that it’s important to have balance between the consumption of the two minerals; too much zinc interferes in the absorption of copper and too much copper can be toxic, like stated above. A good source of both zinc and copper are black sesame seeds.

6.      Silica Intake: Silica, which is also know as silicon dioxide, was proved in 1939 by Professor Adolf Butenandt that it is essential to human’s skeleton development. Also, silica is thought to stimulate hair growth and prevent baldness. Therefore, silica plays an important role in the human body and helps on the hair’s health. Silica can be obtained through a variety of foods, such as strawberries, asparagus, wheat, rice, beans, cucumber, and potatoes.

7.      Essential Oils: Rosemary oil has been long used because it is known to increase the scalp’s circulation. Also, coconut oil is known for being super nourishing, giving shine and softness to the hair. Add a few drops of rosemary oil to your shampoo or massage your scalp regularly using either rosemary oil or coconut oil.

Remember to consume foods rich in vitamins A, B, C and E. Also make sure your intake of sulphur, protein, iron, zinc and copper are right. Having a balanced diet can solve a thousand problems you may have and save you from some that may come. Your body is your temple, make sure you take care of it!

NEA hopes that these tips can help you maintain healthy, shiny, and voluminous hair so you“Look As Good As You Feel”. If you have tried these tips and your hair loss problem hasn’t been solved, make sure you stop by our clinic in Massachusetts or New Hampshire or schedule your appointment with us. Fall Foods Good for Hair and Skin

Around this time of year we see many different colorful fruits and vegetables all around us. Not only are they appealing to the eye, many of them are good for our hair and skin.

Oil from pumpkin seeds is full of vitamin E, zinc, omega 3- and 6- fatty acids, and antioxidants. It can help our skin and it can possibly increase hair growth because it inhibits an enzyme that may stop or slow hair growth by producing Dihyrdotestosterone (DHT).

Green apples have antioxidants that help our skin. Squash contains a lot of vitamin C and has beta-carotene that gets converted into vitamin A which is an antioxidant our body needs for our skin. Cranberries have vitamin A and vitamin C which are good for our hair. Pomegranate seed oil has a high content of an acid that helps strengthen hair by increasing blood circulation in the scalp.

If you are not a fan of such foods, you can get similar nutrition with HairStart® Maximum Growth Therapy and HairStart® Essentials™. Each contains various vitamins and minerals (among other things) that help to make hair stronger and stimulate new growth. If you are unsure which would be the better choice for you, you can discuss it with an expert who has been specifically trained in hair growth. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp and help identify potential nutritional deficiencies.

At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss, and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.
