How to Protect Your Hair During Cold Weather

Dry, cold weather seems to go hand in hand with bad hair days. Our hair’s health is affected by many internal and external factors, one being the environment. If you notice your hair seems more dry, brittle and lacks luster during the colder months it could be the weather stressing out your strands! Here are some ways to protect your hair from harsh winter conditions.
Wear a hat
The winter elements can dry your hair out, making it more prone to breakage. Having your hair covered helps lock in moisture and protects your hair. For wool, cotton and other similar materials line the inside with silk or wrap your head with a satin scarf to prevent friction and breakage. If you’re worried about hat-hair wear an updo hair style or spray with a paraben free, moisturizing frizz control.

Cooler showers
After being out in the freezing snow there’s nothing like a nice hot shower. However, too hot water dries your hair out even more making your hair brittle. Instead of a steaming hot shower, when washing your hair lower the temperature to a lukewarm and then rinse with cool water.

Weekly hair mask
Doing a hair mask or deep conditioning mask weekly is a great step to add to your hair care routine year-round but especially during the winter. They can reverse the effects of dryness while making sure your hair is protected. You can use a leave in conditioner or DIY your own hydrating hair mask. Apply the mask to wet or dry hair for about 15-30 minutes, depending on your needed level of moisture, for soft, shiny, and more manageable hair.

Avoid heat styling
Since we know cold weather can rob moisture from your hair, you’ll want to avoid using heat styling tools during the cooler months as much as possible. Heat tools will only further suck the moisture from your hair increasing the chance of split ends and breakage. It’s better to let your hair air dry and not use straightening or curling irons to style. Side note: DO NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH WET HAIR! Going outside in the winter can cause your hair to freeze and break off. If you’re short on time shower at night and let your hair air dry while you sleep.

The Surprising Secret to Longer Hair

Are you looking for ways to grow longer, stronger hair? Well the answer could be right above you, literally. A healthy hair care regimen is only half the solution, but many are ignoring the whole other side to getting luscious hair: your scalp. A clean and well cared for scalp is what produces healthy hair. If your hair seems to hardly grow the answer could be to look at your scalp. Here are some tips for men and women to make sure your scalp is the perfect growing environment for your hair.

Keep the scalp clean
This may seem like a no brainer, but many aren’t taking the right steps to properly cleanse their scalp. As you wash your hair make sure you really focus on your scalp. Starting at the roots, gently rub around your head in circular motions using the pads of your fingers working down to the ends. Rinse with warm, not hot, water (repeat if necessary) then do the same process with conditioner and rise with cool water. However, make sure you’re not over washing your hair, which can lead to dryness and potential hair loss. Dermatologists advise washing the hair no more than 2-3 times a week during Summers, and 1-2 times a week during Winters.

Exfoliation and Circulation
Having proper blood circulation is an important factor in supplementing hair growth because blood carries oxygen and needed nutrients to our hair follicles. Washing your hair encourages blood flow to the scalp but also occasionally exfoliating by adding a few spoonfuls of sugar to your shampoo gets rid of dead skin cells and promotes good blood flow. Remember, to use the pads of your fingers to work the mixture in and not your fingernails to avoid unintentional scabbing. Plus, at the end of a long day a good scalp massage with essential oils is a great way to stimulate circulation and melt away stress. Also, Laser Hair therapy is an effective FDA approved hair loss solution that uses low level red light to boost blood flow to your scalp to regrow and restore damaged and thinning hair. Treatment sessions are quick and painless, and many clients notice visible results after only a few sessions.

Balance moisture and oils
Your scalp naturally produces oils essential for keeping the skin moisturized and healthy. Over washing strips, the scalp from these oils making hair it becomes dry and brittle. However, too much buildup clogs hair follicles and stunts growth. That’s why a good balance of washing and using oils and moisturizers is critical. Make sure you’re consuming enough nutrients and oils as well as directly applying them. Fish oil and foods rich in omega 3s are great for hair and nails and drinking plenty of water is crucial. Aloe vera gel and coconut oil can help get rid of dandruff and finding a quality leave in conditioner or moisturizer for your hair type makes a world of difference.

Protect your scalp
Damage to the hair and scalp can comes from several factors. Environmental factors such as UV rays, improperly using heat styling tools, and over processing when chemically treating or coloring hair are just a few instances where the scalp can be damaged. When outside protect your scalp from exposure to harsh elements and pollution. Consult a professional stylist when chemically treating hair and use plenty of conditioner. If your hair tingles when coloring that can be a sign of a dry scalp.  A dry or damaged scalp causes dandruff, inflammation, and potentially hair loss. Give your hair and scalp an occasional break from heat and chemical styling and regularly follow the tips talked about above. If you’re still experiencing thinning hair or irregular hair loss it could be signs of another problem like genetic hair loss or health issues. Speak to your doctor and a hair restoration specialist to pinpoint the cause and find a solution.

With our medical grade products that cleanse your hair and scalp and advanced hair treatments we can give you longer, stronger, healthier hair! No matter your level of hair loss, man or woman, New England Associates has the solution for you to replace and restore your hair. Fashionable Fall Hairstyles for Men

Despite what’s been said in the past men do and should care about their looks and grooming styles. The right haircut paired with a full and healthy-looking head of hair helps men appear younger and can boost their self-esteem. If you’re looking for fresh new cut this fall here are some of this year’s coolest styles to try out.

The Textured French Crop
The Textured French Crop adds a bit more styling freedom to the classic French crop. With short back and sides but a bit more length left up top this “do” is easy to maintain and allows you to bring out a casual but elevated look with a quick wash and dry and a bit of pomade. This hair style can complements high cheekbones and a strong jawline.

The Pompadour
Famously worn by celebrities like Elvis, David Beckham, and Sean Connery’s James Bond this timeless style screams class and sophistication. This style is good for medium length hair and longer round faces. This cut is typically shorter on the sides and back and left longer on top, but the fade degree and length can be played with depending on your personal preference and how high you want “the poof”. This also can make hair appear fuller and thicker.

The High and Slick

If you have a larger forehead this style is for you. The militaristic high and tight becomes a more dashing and polished look with this style. The High and Slick features the classic short, high up fade on the back and sides but with a close cut on top too. Grab a shiny pomade then slick back the top for a suave date night or corporate work look.

Many of today’s hair styles for men are designed to enhance your hair’s natural pattern and create a full and healthy look. Having noticeable thinning hair and bald spots has been shown to impede a man’s confidence and cause distress.  When it comes to dating, excelling in a career, or even hanging out with friends feeling confident about your appearance proves difficult if you’re constantly thinking about your hair. New England Associates can help you achieve any style and cut you desire with our hair restoration and replacement solutions. Our proven hair loss solutions are effective and provide noticeable results. No matter your level of hair loss we have a solution for you! Hair Loss Seen Earlier in Younger Generations

While many think balding and thinning hair is a problem for older men and women, an increasing number of millennials are coming to doctors with concerns of hair loss. Most men and women will experience hair loss within their lifetime. However, many are experiencing hair loss as early as their 20's and 30's with a rising number of hair loss cases seen even in teen years. While some hair loss is common as we age younger generations are already expressing concerns of thinning or receding hair lines.

What might be causing this rise in millennials concerns with hair loss?  It could be pressure from society in trying to maintain today’s beauty standards seen in media. Today, more than ever, there is a greater spotlight and exposure on celebrities. This creates a greater desire in young people to achieve the looks, trends and standards of beauty they see more than previous generations. Thick, shiny, luscious locks are looked at as more attractive. Think Jon Snow’s curly locks from the show Game of Thrones or international pop sensation Ariana Grande’s famous high ponytail.

Stress levels are also proven to affect hair growth. Stress can interrupt the hair growth cycle. Those who experience high levels of stress can experience premature hair loss. Researchers from the American Psychology Association (APA) discovered that members of generation X and millennials reported higher levels of stress than older generations. They also seem to have more difficulty successfully coping. Stress directly applied to the hair is also a factor for premature hair loss. Today younger generations put their hair through a lot with excessive bleaching, dying, and use of heavy extensions. Such stylings damagehair strands and puts a lot of tension on hair follicles causing them to weaken and break.

Diet is also a huge factor in influencing hair health. Proteins, biotin, and vitamin C are just some of the many essential nutrients needed for healthy hair growth. However, with the increase in vegetarian and vegan diets among young people they may not be getting the nutrients needed to promote hair growth. A study at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas indicated that severely reduced protein consumption as well as deficiencies in zinc, vitamin D, and other nutrients can negatively affect hair growth. With less intake of eggs, fatty fish or red meats the lack of essential vitamins and nutrients can slow down hair growth or even cause hair loss.

Why wait until your older? If you’re concerned about hair loss or are experiencing thinning hair New England Associates can help. No matter your stage of hair loss we have solutions for both men and women. With numerous surgical and non-surgical restoration options and treatments we can craft the perfect treatment plan for your specific type of hair loss. The Best Foods to Eat to Promote Hair Growth

Did you know when it comes to achieving thicker, longer, and healthier hair diet is a huge influencing factor? A healthy hair care regimen is not just what you put on your hair to make it grow. What you put into your body is equally if not more important if you want to grow your hair, especially as we age. Although you can’t change certain hair loss factors like age and genetics, diet is one thing you have control over. In fact, a lack of essential nutrients can lead to hair loss. Here are some great foods to add to your diet to help promote hair growth.

Leafy Greens

Are rich in iron and vitamins A and C all which help promote hair growth. Vitamin C helps promote collagen production, which can help strengthen your hair strands. Vitamin A aids in sebum production in your hair glands promoting growth. Plus, not getting enough iron can lead to iron deficiencies which have been linked to hair loss. Add foods like spinach, kale, and collard greens to your diet.

Eggs
You may see many hair care blogs and articles suggest putting raw eggs in your hair masks. This is because eggs are high in biotin and protein both essential nutrients for hair growth. Biotin is an important synthesizer linked to boosting hair growth and is a popular nutrient often advertised in hairgrowth products. Hair follicles are primarily made up of proteins so a lack thereof can cause hair loss.

Berries
Berries are loaded with beneficial compounds such as collagen and antioxidants. Collagen strengthens your hair stands to prevent them from becoming brittle and breaking. Antioxidants are not only good for your heart health but for your hair’s health as well. They protect your body and hair follicles from harmful molecules that naturally exist in the body called free radicals. Studies have shown that free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are some popular berries you can try adding more of to your diet.

Fatty Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids are abundant in fish and have been linked to promoting hair growth. Many people take fish oil supplements for heart health and to reduce risk of conditions such as stroke and Alzheimer’s.  However, they have also been shown to increase hair density in women when mixed with supplements containing omega-6 fatty acids (found in many nuts and vegetable oils) and antioxidants. Fatty fish also contain high levels of vitamin D3 and B vitamins which are good for skin and help to condition and strengthen hair. Fish high in omega-3’s are salmon, albacore tuna, and trout.

A balance of all these foods and an overall healthy diet are crucial for your hair’s growth. If you’re suffering from other uncontrollablehair loss factors or want to repair already damaged hair come to New England Associates. We help both men and women find a solution to their hair loss no matter the stage or type. Our treatment options are proven effective at repairing and restoring thinning and damaged hair. How to Treat Postpartum Hair Loss

It’s well known that during pregnancy women’s bodies go through many changes. What many don’t know is that even after the baby is born women go through even more bodily changes and new symptoms arise. Postpartum hair loss is a common but not often talked about occurrence many women experience.

Hair loss that is connected to pregnancy usually occurs after delivery. Our hair grows and sheds in phases. During pregnancy hair often will often become longer and look and feel more luxurious. This is because of increased hormones during pregnancy which causes more hairs to go into the resting phase. Once the baby is born women’s hormones return to normal levels and their hair cycle resumes its normal pace. About one to five months postpartum the hairs in the resting phase move to the shedding phase all at once causing excessive hair loss. This excessive shedding of hair after pregnancy is known as telogen effluvium. According to the American Pregnancy Association this affects between 40 to 50% of women. However, this increase in shedding is temporary and the amount depends on what phase your hairs are in between pregnancy and delivery. Most women will return to their usual hair growth cycle within six months, or between 6 and 12 months after birth.

Any hair loss can be scary and emotionally challenging especially while having to care for a new baby. While telogen effluvium is completely common and only last temporarily there are things you can do to help prevent or decrease the severity of shedding. Make sure you maintain a healthy hair care regimen by getting regular trims and keep your hair and scalp clean with special shampoos and conditioners. Avoid heat styling and tight hair styles that can pull or put stress on your strands like braids or ponytails. Also make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eat a healthy and balanced diet. Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids and antioxidants that may provide protection for your hair follicles and promote growth. You can also take supplements and vitamins like biotin, fish oil, or a multivitamin. Taking a prenatal vitamin is not only great for nursing but also it is packed with the vitamins and minerals to grow your hair and nails fast-just like during pregnancy.

It’s also important to talk with your doctor to make sure you have the right balance of hormones and that other health issues are not causing excessive shedding. If you notice bald spots forming or permanent hair loss happening as a result of health issues or genetics you should speak with a trusted professional hair restoration specialist. The earlier you take steps to treat and prevent the problems the more hair loss solutions are available to you. New England of Associates specializes in hair restoration and replacement for any level of hair loss.
