The Link Between Pregnancy and Hair Loss

During Pregnancy:
During pregnancy a lot of women actually grow hair faster and longer. This phenomenon occurs because while you are pregnant your estrogen levels are higher, estrogen stimulates hair growth, and that may lead to an increase in hair growth and hair strength. Women in most cases don’t have excessive hair loss while pregnant. Women that may have experienced hair loss while pregnant could be due to a poor diet. When women are pregnant they may need to eat more for the baby so it is important that if pregnant you still eat healthy foods not only for your baby’s health, but your health and your hair’s health as well. Pregnancy hormones may also lead to unwanted stress which may lead to hair loss.

After Birth:
After the birth of the child is when some women tend to experience hair loss. Losing hair after the birth of your child is actually normal and is a form of Telogen Effluvium. The loss of hair occurs after birth (more like hair shedding instead of actual hair loss) because your hormone levels are lowering and going back to normal. “Hair shedding” may last until about a year after the child was born. You may not be able to prevent hair shedding, but it is important to keep your hair healthy and strong before, during, and after your pregnancy. Be gentle with your hair and try to maintain a healthy diet.

How to Take Care of Your Skin and Hair During the Summer

The summer heat may affect your skin and hair in a variety of ways, but there are a few different things you can do to try to prevent damage to your skin and hair. To protect your skin and hair you should wear protective clothing. Wear a hat to cover your hair during the extreme heat waves of summer. Wear lighter colors as well as fabrics that may be less prone to overheating. Swimming in a pool may also be damaging to your skin and hair. Make sure to rinse off with clean water before and after you go swimming to limit the amount of chlorine left on your body and in your hair. Chlorine can dry out your skin and hair, so summer is a great time to add additional moisture and hair treatments for protection and nourishment. For your hair, you can also use a leave-in conditioner beforehand if you know you are planning on going swimming in a pool.

Don’t forget your scalp! Golfing, boating and laying or standing in the sun can do damage and cause sun burn to your scalp. Wear a protective covering such as a hat or stand or boat under an awning or umbrella.

Understand how UV rays are actually be harmful to your skin. Damage from the Sun’s rays may activate free radicals which can cause skin aging and don’t forget about the possibility of a painful sunburn. Over exposure to UV rays may also cause cancer over time. You may be able to prevent the damage to your skin from the Sun by wearing the appropriate sunscreen. Do some research and find out what sunscreen is right for you and what amount of SPF protection you need. Keep in mind that while sunscreen may help protect your skin it won’t last forever. If you stay outside with the Sun beating down on you for a long period of time you may still be prone to skin damage. The future appearance and health of your skin can be a direct result from the long term damage to your skin.

Drinking plenty of fluids and eating healthy may also help your skin when battling the summer heat. Drinking water and eating healthy will keep your skin hydrated and withstand the summer heat.
