How to Protect Your Hair During Cold Weather

Dry, cold weather seems to go hand in hand with bad hair days. Our hair’s health is affected by many internal and external factors, one being the environment. If you notice your hair seems more dry, brittle and lacks luster during the colder months it could be the weather stressing out your strands! Here are some ways to protect your hair from harsh winter conditions.
Wear a hat
The winter elements can dry your hair out, making it more prone to breakage. Having your hair covered helps lock in moisture and protects your hair. For wool, cotton and other similar materials line the inside with silk or wrap your head with a satin scarf to prevent friction and breakage. If you’re worried about hat-hair wear an updo hair style or spray with a paraben free, moisturizing frizz control.

Cooler showers
After being out in the freezing snow there’s nothing like a nice hot shower. However, too hot water dries your hair out even more making your hair brittle. Instead of a steaming hot shower, when washing your hair lower the temperature to a lukewarm and then rinse with cool water.

Weekly hair mask
Doing a hair mask or deep conditioning mask weekly is a great step to add to your hair care routine year-round but especially during the winter. They can reverse the effects of dryness while making sure your hair is protected. You can use a leave in conditioner or DIY your own hydrating hair mask. Apply the mask to wet or dry hair for about 15-30 minutes, depending on your needed level of moisture, for soft, shiny, and more manageable hair.

Avoid heat styling
Since we know cold weather can rob moisture from your hair, you’ll want to avoid using heat styling tools during the cooler months as much as possible. Heat tools will only further suck the moisture from your hair increasing the chance of split ends and breakage. It’s better to let your hair air dry and not use straightening or curling irons to style. Side note: DO NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH WET HAIR! Going outside in the winter can cause your hair to freeze and break off. If you’re short on time shower at night and let your hair air dry while you sleep.

The Surprising Secret to Longer Hair

Are you looking for ways to grow longer, stronger hair? Well the answer could be right above you, literally. A healthy hair care regimen is only half the solution, but many are ignoring the whole other side to getting luscious hair: your scalp. A clean and well cared for scalp is what produces healthy hair. If your hair seems to hardly grow the answer could be to look at your scalp. Here are some tips for men and women to make sure your scalp is the perfect growing environment for your hair.

Keep the scalp clean
This may seem like a no brainer, but many aren’t taking the right steps to properly cleanse their scalp. As you wash your hair make sure you really focus on your scalp. Starting at the roots, gently rub around your head in circular motions using the pads of your fingers working down to the ends. Rinse with warm, not hot, water (repeat if necessary) then do the same process with conditioner and rise with cool water. However, make sure you’re not over washing your hair, which can lead to dryness and potential hair loss. Dermatologists advise washing the hair no more than 2-3 times a week during Summers, and 1-2 times a week during Winters.

Exfoliation and Circulation
Having proper blood circulation is an important factor in supplementing hair growth because blood carries oxygen and needed nutrients to our hair follicles. Washing your hair encourages blood flow to the scalp but also occasionally exfoliating by adding a few spoonfuls of sugar to your shampoo gets rid of dead skin cells and promotes good blood flow. Remember, to use the pads of your fingers to work the mixture in and not your fingernails to avoid unintentional scabbing. Plus, at the end of a long day a good scalp massage with essential oils is a great way to stimulate circulation and melt away stress. Also, Laser Hair therapy is an effective FDA approved hair loss solution that uses low level red light to boost blood flow to your scalp to regrow and restore damaged and thinning hair. Treatment sessions are quick and painless, and many clients notice visible results after only a few sessions.

Balance moisture and oils
Your scalp naturally produces oils essential for keeping the skin moisturized and healthy. Over washing strips, the scalp from these oils making hair it becomes dry and brittle. However, too much buildup clogs hair follicles and stunts growth. That’s why a good balance of washing and using oils and moisturizers is critical. Make sure you’re consuming enough nutrients and oils as well as directly applying them. Fish oil and foods rich in omega 3s are great for hair and nails and drinking plenty of water is crucial. Aloe vera gel and coconut oil can help get rid of dandruff and finding a quality leave in conditioner or moisturizer for your hair type makes a world of difference.

Protect your scalp
Damage to the hair and scalp can comes from several factors. Environmental factors such as UV rays, improperly using heat styling tools, and over processing when chemically treating or coloring hair are just a few instances where the scalp can be damaged. When outside protect your scalp from exposure to harsh elements and pollution. Consult a professional stylist when chemically treating hair and use plenty of conditioner. If your hair tingles when coloring that can be a sign of a dry scalp.  A dry or damaged scalp causes dandruff, inflammation, and potentially hair loss. Give your hair and scalp an occasional break from heat and chemical styling and regularly follow the tips talked about above. If you’re still experiencing thinning hair or irregular hair loss it could be signs of another problem like genetic hair loss or health issues. Speak to your doctor and a hair restoration specialist to pinpoint the cause and find a solution.
