Solutions for Thyroid Related Hair Loss

Thyroid conditions are manageable and can be kept under control through medications. However, you may experience hair loss even after starting drugs to help with your condition. Certain drugs used to treat thyroid conditions, such as carbimazole and propylthiouracil, have been known to contribute to hair loss. Using essential oils or taking biotin supplements are an option to help slow hair loss but hair regrowth is slow and new growth may differ in color or texture.

Those who suffer from thyroid conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often struggle with thinning, brittle hair and hair loss. Our hair goes through stages of growth and each hair is in 1 of 4 stages at any time. Normally, you lose between 50 to 100 hairs a day but it goes unnoticed since other hairs are in the normal growth or resting phases. Thyroid conditions affects hair at the root, resulting in hair growing slower and resulting in noticeable thinning.

There are effective solutions to treat dry, brittle hair and boost regrowth. New England Associates® offers Laser hair therapy is a process that strengthens and thickens hair at the root directly where fluctuating hormones caused by thyroid problems affect growth. After only a few treatments you may see fuller, shiner, healthier hair. Hair replacement  is another great option to restore thinning hair. Hair can be easily styled to your desired look and length and you can still participate in the same range of activities you’ve always enjoyed. Your new hair will look and feel completely real because it is real hair!
Results can happen within 2 months or hair can be added over-time so no one will know you’ve had something done.

If you’re experiencing dry, brittle or thinning hair New England Associates has the solution for you. Since 1982 we’ve been helping clients repair, restore, and replace lost hair by utilizing the latest and most advance treatments. We offer FREE, no-obligation, microscopic hair and scalp evaluations to help you identify the best hair loss solution and provide you with the best possible results. Age Appropriate Hair Restoration

No hair loss situation is the same. Similarly, each hair loss solution should not be the same; every person and solution should be unique to their age, needs and situation. Have you ever seen a hair restoration solution that is not age appropriate, meaning the results don’t look natural? At New England Associates®, we strive to give our clients the hair they desire with the most natural looking results that are age appropriate. So which hair loss solution is age appropriate for you? Let’s find out!

How old are you and how advanced is your hair loss?
The earlier you decide to treat hair loss the better off you are at achieving natural looking results. The Norwood Hamilton scale is a good indicator of what stage of hair loss you may be in.  Levels 1-3 may not require hair restoration but require simpler solutions such as laser hair therapy or hair transplants. Depending on how advanced your hair loss is, New England Associates® has a solution that is tailored for your specific case that is age appropriate. How many times have you seen an older person with a hair piece that just doesn’t look natural? We will try to thicken your existing hair while growing new hair so that your final results look as natural as possible!

What are your options?
For people in the early to mid-stages of hair loss we recommend a multi-therapeutic approach that utilizes scientifically proven products and devices that slow hair loss and even grow new hair! For people experiencing advanced hair loss, we offer surgical and non-surgical hair grafting. Surgical hair grafting is typically performed when a patient has a sufficient amount of hair left in the donor area.

Is your solution to hair loss age appropriate?
Whichever hair restoration solution we determine is best for you, we factor in how natural the results will look. An older man or woman may not have a thick head of colorful hair, but we will cover bald spots and improve the quality of your hair, making the final results look age appropriate. Visit our website at http://newenglandassociates.com/contact_us.htm to schedule your free hair and scalp consultation today!

Hair Restoration Solutions for Men

According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of thirty-five, approximately two thirds of men will have lost some hair. By the age of fifty, 85% will have experienced hair thinning or have lost a significant amount of hair. Male pattern baldness and hair loss is generally a genetic factor in most men and can make finding solutions seem like an impossible task. At New England Associates® we make it easy and have products and services designed to help a man's hair appear healthier, fuller and even longer looking. No matter what stage of hair loss you may be at we have the best and latest hair loss solutions for you!

One of the keys to fighting hair loss is combating it in its earliest stages. Our HairStart® products and supplements are specifically designed to strengthen your strands and are proven to slow hair loss by providing essential nutrients and creating a healthy growth environment. We also offer laser hair therapy, a non-surgical FDA approved hair restoration process that stimulates and strengthens hair at the root using cold-laser technology. This treatment has been proven to slow or stop hair loss and promotes regrowth so you can have thicker and fuller hair again.

Non-medical hair replacement options are a great solution for restoring healthier-looking hair without need for invasive procedures. A few of the options we offer are Hair Grafting, InVisiStrand, or Hair Over Time; completely natural looking hair restoration systems that can be easily customized to your desired hair color and style. This pain-free dermal-to-dermis infusion is the secret behind Hair Grafting and this new procedure can make your hair longer and fuller looking in a matter of hours! Beginning results are seen immediately and finished results can be achieved over time so no one will know. It looks and feels real because it is real! You can still do all the activities you enjoy without worrying about thinning or bald areas showing.

Many men, if they qualify, may benefit from hair transplantation. This hair restoration procedure surgically transplants your own healthy hairs to thinning areas to regrow natural-looking hair. Highly trained physicians will work directly with you and your particular needs to carefully craft your procedure for optimum results.

Hair loss makes a man typically appear 10 years older than his actual age. With New England Associates® you can restore your hair to its former glory or maybe look even better than before!

At New England Associates® we want to help you “Look As Good As You Feel!” and provide you with a No Obligation Consultation and Microscopic Hair Analysis Free of Charge.

What is Low Level Laser Therapy and How Does it Work?

Low Level Laser Hair Therapy is a treatment used to treat those who suffer from thinning/damaged hair, or androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern balding. Androgenetic alopecia affects 70% of men and 40% of women.  Laser Hair Therapy is a safe hair restoration option that can be greatly effective as a stand-alone treatment or as an additional treatment after a hair transplantation to speed up healing and hair quality. Low Level Laser Therapy is also called red light therapy, cold laser, cool laser, soft laser, biostimulation, and photobiomodulation.

Laser hair therapy is FDA approved and utilizes red lasers, typically 630-670 nanometers in wavelength. These lasers penetrate the scalp to increase the blood flow. This then stimulates metabolism in the catagen and telogen follicles, which can result in an increase of hair in the anagen stage.

“The photons of light act on cytochrome C oxidase leading to the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This is converted to cyclic AMP in the hair follicle cells, releasing energy and stimulating metabolic processes necessary for hair growth.
Release of nitric oxide from cells leads to increased vascularisation to the scalp distributing nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots.” - Anoma Ranaweera B.V. Sc; PhD

There are no true downsides to laser hair therapy, it is relative inexpensive, clean and painless, no adverse effects have been reported, and it requires minimal time commitment. You can even have a laser treatment on your lunch break!

To find out if laser hair therapy treatments are right for you, call NEA at 1-866-424-7782 or visit us online at newenglandassociates.com to schedule your FREE and private consultation today!

How Men Can Keep A Healthy Looking Full Head of Hair

Traditionally, there has been greater emphasis on women finding the best hair care routine and styling techniques to prevent thinning hair.  However, statistics show that men are much more likely to experience hair loss at some point in their lives than women are. Also hair loss can be much more noticeable in men than women. Men tend to lose hair quicker and in more noticeable areas, such as the crown and the hairline, versus women who may have more gradual thinning all over the scalp. According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of thirty-five, approximately two thirds of men will have lost a little hair. By the age of fifty, 85% will have experienced hair thinning or have lost a significant amount of hair. So clearly having a healthy hair and scalp routine is just as important for men as it is women. While male pattern baldness is often genetic there are still plenty of things you can do to maintain a shiny, healthy looking hair and increase hair’s strength, elasticity, and overall longevity

Pat Dry
Drying your hair incorrectly is one of the biggest causes of damage to men’s hair. Wet hair is more susceptible to damage and can stretch or break when rubbed with a towel causing split ends and frizziness. Instead, you may want to use a t-shirt or microfiber towel and stroke your hair in the direction it grows.

Reduce Heat
Excessive heat in the shower and directly applied to your hair can negatively affect your hair’s health over time. Very hot water strips the hairs natural oils and nutrients needed for growth while blow-drying can over dry hair and cause breakage. Experts suggest rinsing hair with cooler water and letting hair air dry. If you’re pinched for time or want a specific style apply a thermal styling serum to your hair before using heated styling tools.

Bonus styling tip: if you opt to wear a hat or go with a quick and easy “man-bun” avoid them being too tight to prevent “traction alopecia” a condition in which hair is pulled out of the scalp. If worn too long it can cause permanent damage.

Use The Right Products and Tools
Finding the best hair products and styling tools for your specific hair type is crucial in maintaining your hair’s longevity and health. Start with the best and most natural products for your hair, such as HairStart® and NEA products. Don’t use a brush on wet hair.  Instead use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently work out tangles. If you really prefer using a brush to detangle buy a paddle brush. When styling use sulfate free products if possible and regularly apply products that protect from environmental weather.

Stick to A Regular Routine
You can have all the right tools and products but if you never use them your hair can develop excessive build up, get tangled, and become weak and brittle. Wash your hair once a week or every other day (depending on your hair type) and schedule a regular visit to your favorite barber or hair stylist for a trim. Even if you’re trying to grow your hair out have them trim your hair about every six weeks to eliminate split ends and damaged hair. This will help your hair to grow faster and maintain elasticity.

Stay Healthy
Just like our skin the condition of your hair can be a reflection our your body’s health. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and enough sleep can help keep your hair healthy and provide needed nutrients. Also drinking plenty of water can aids in hair growth and increases your scalp’s health that produces overall better looking hair.

And remember, as the saying goes “you can’t fight your DNA!”  Hair Loss for many of us is due to our genetics and family history.

Losing hair is not any less embarrassing for men than it is for women and can really negatively affect one’s confidence. At New England Associates® our 36 years of experience in the hair replacement industry has shown us what it's like for men to lose their hair and we understand how to combat the problem. We offer every hair restoration and completely natural looking hair replacement solutions available today so we can grow, restore, and strengthen your hair. Discover the Best Hair Care Routine for Your Hair

The key to maintaining healthy hair is to adopt a hair care regimen customized to your specific hair care needs early on. Last month we talked about the three main categories hair falls into and how to identify your specific hair type. If you haven’t identified your hair type within each category check out our last blog http://hairstart.blogspot.com/2018/08/get-best-care-for-your-hair.html then circle back here. Knowing your hair type within each key factor not only gives you insight on styling techniques but also provides information on which products are best suited for your hair’s needs. Here are some ideas on how to custom-tailor your hair care routine and maintain your hair’s health.

Managing Texture:
Thick hair can be a bit difficult to manage while thin hair never seems to hold any desired styles and is more prone to damage from over-processing. Washing thick hair less often is better since it tends to be drier and benefits from buildup of natural oils. However on wash days, when it comes to detangling thick hair find a good detangling brush and spray a small amount of hairspray on it. Starting from the ends slowly work your way up to the root, using short downward strokes, to avoid pulling out mounds of hair. Hairstylist Mia Santiago of Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger suggests avoiding products with “volume” on the bottle instead opting for “highly concentrated products” so you’re not using gallons of conditioner just to cover all of your hair. When it comes to fine hair less is more when it comes to chemical treatments and styling mousses and gels. Wash fine hair often to prevent stringy, greasy hair and avoid putting conditioner directly on your roots for more volume. To protect fine hair from over processing and damage lessen the amount of time color and chemical treatments sit in your hair and let your hair air dry as much as possible. If you are blow-drying or styling with a curling iron use low heat and always apply a heat protection sealant beforehand.

Controlling Hair Porosity:
The porosity level of your hair is a factor of genetics but is changed by environment and frequency of styling. Lauren Cash from Madison Reed says, “Ideally, you don’t want high porous hair (damaged) or low porous hair (resistant to absorbing moisture well), you’re aiming for the healthy average.” If you have high-level porosity or damaged hair use hair care products infused with keratin, argon oil, and ginseng root extract to repair damage, strengthen your hair, and seal in moisture. Depending on the level of hair damage weekly or monthly hair masks and protein treatments are great for filling gaps and tears in your hair. Reinforce with hair styling products that use sulfate-free formulas and will protect from environmental stressors. To increase moisture retention on low porosity hair use products containing more alkaline ingredients that will help lift your cuticles. Shampooing with warm water and steaming your hair also opens up cuticles and helps moisture get to your hair when it comes to applying conditioners. Afterwards, lightly rinse conditioner out with cool water and style on damp hair. Lock in moisture with light oils and butters such as castor oil, olive oil, and shea butter but avoid using too much to prevent excessive product build up.

Maintaining Elasticity:
To maintain hair elasticity avoid frequent heat styling and lengthen the time between chemical treatments and coloring. To restore elasticity use shampoos and conditioners packed with protein and let your hair air dry often. Once a week use a deep conditioning mask or reconstructive treatment with keratin or vegetable protein and leave it in your hair for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing. This will prevent breakage and restore elasticity by maintaining a healthy balance of strength and moisture.

Benefits of Laser Hair Therapy

Trying to style thinning and damaged hair is time consuming and can chip away at your level of confidence. You shouldn’t have to spend hours in front of the mirror covering up bald spots or not being able to enjoy certain activities for fear of those spots being exposed. Let us help you “Look As Good As You Feel” at New England Associates® with our Laser Hair Therapy program. Laser hair therapy (LHT) is an FDA approved non-surgical hair restoration solution that has been used all over the world. LHT has been tested for effectiveness and safety for over 30 years and is a proven cosmetic treatment for restoring thinning hair and hair loss. Using therapeutic low red light-level lasers the treatments thicken and revitalize hair by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles. This increases cell metabolism to help damaged cells to repair themselves and increase hair growth. One of the many benefits of this treatment is it can be done multiple times so you have a best chance to fully strengthening and restore your hair. It is also a non-invasive hair restoration solution, which makes for quick easy treatment with no downtime and is virtually painless.

When used in conjunction with proper scalp and hair hygiene products such as HairStart® Essentials, most patients saw an increase in hair growth and improvement in hair density and thickness. A European study showed 100% retention of hairs and a 20% improvement in thickness and density of hair follicles using Laser Bio-Stimulation.
Now, the latest study released at the ISHRS Convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2009 showed:

• 100% of the subjects saw an increase in hair growth
• 97% increased hair count equal to or greater than 20%
• 77% of the subjects increase of greater than or equal to 51%

Laser Hair Therapy can offer natural and effective results with your own hair. Check out a real NEA customers experience with our LHT treatments here.

Get the Best Care For Your Hair!

Most people know the four main types of hair: straight, wavy, curly, and coily (if you don’t know your base hair type; take this quiz). However, aside from just type, your hair’s texture, porosity level and elasticity are important factors to identify. Knowing where you hair falls within these categories provides important information on what styling techniques and hair care regimens work best for your hair.

Texture:
Hair texture or “thickness” is important to know especially when it comes to hair styling and coloring. The three main hair textures are thick, medium and fine.  According to Madison Reed, a popular hair color company, thick hair holds curls very well but is the slowest to absorb color and can be resistant to chemical styling like perms and straightening. Fine hair has a difficult time holding curls, absorbs colors quickly and is more prone to over-processing and damage. Medium hair falls somewhere in between for time needed to absorb chemical treatments and is fairly easy to style since it hold its shape well. To determine your hair’s texture cut a six-inch piece of sewing thread and compare the thickness to a single strand of your hair. Laying the string and your hair on a flat plain surface is best. Thick hair will look thicker than the thread, medium hair will have about the same thickness, and fine hair will be a lot thinner than the thread.

Porosity:
Porosity level determines the ability to which your hair absorbs moisture, water, and products. This factor is especially important in knowing how to properly care for curly and coily type hair. “It is directly related to the condition of the cuticle layer of the hair, which acts like a shield to the inside layers of your hair,” says Madison Reed. Low porosity hair means your cuticles are tight which makes your hair pretty resistant to absorbing hair color, moisture and products. High porosity hair absorbs products quickly but releases the moisture just as fast because the cuticle layer is open. Your porosity level is a factor of genetics but can change over time. Having high porosity hair can be a sign of damaged hair caused by over processing and too much heat styling. Normal porosity hair is a sure sign of healthy hair. It holds moisture and products for an extended period of time and reacts best to styling and hair treatments. Essence magazine suggests dropping a strand of freshly washed, dry hair into a glass of water and see where it falls. If it floats near the top and takes awhile to sink you have low porosity, if it sinks immediately you have high porosity or damaged hair, if it floats in the middle you have healthy, normal porosity.

Elasticity:
Your hair’s elasticity refers to how much pulling and stretching the hair can take without breaking. High elasticity means the hair is healthy and balanced and is getting enough moisture and protein. Having the opposite effect, low elasticity indicates your hair isn’t getting enough nutrients and is highly susceptible to breakage and resists color and hair treatments. “Elasticity can be lost due to age, heat damage, exposure to the sun, or chemical damage caused by hair treatments,” says Essence Magazine. When your hair is wet, securely hold a strand of hair and stretch it. If the hair stretches and returns to it original length and shape when released, then it has high elasticity. If the strand breaks, or doesn’t return to it’s original shape, your hair has low elasticity.
