Spring Cleaning...Your Scalp!

Spring is typically a time when we think of cleaning. We clean our houses. We clean our yards. We clean our cars. We want to get ready for nicer weather after a long cold winter. But one thing we don’t think about is cleaning our scalp.

Good scalp hygiene is important all year round. It is extra important in the spring, summer, and fall when we tend to sweat more. We sometimes don’t realize that our scalp is just like the skin on our face. And like our face, our scalp can sometimes benefit from a good deep cleansing during the warmer months beginning in Spring. Apple cider vinegar is one homemade way you can do this. The vinegar’s acid can remove sebum and the buildup accumulated from sweat and styling products and shampoos.

If you are worried about your head smelling like a salad, read here to find out what else you can do to clean your scalp.

If you have questions about any damage that such buildups can be doing to your hair, meet with a hair expert and have your hair and scalp checked out under a very powerful microscope that will show you everything that's going on.

At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair, and making the right choice to solve any problems, matters.

Early Signs of Balding and How to Fight It

Did you know hair loss can start at almost any age once you enter adulthood? The primary cause of hair loss is both male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness, affecting almost 50% of adult males and 25% of adult women. The onset of baldness and thinning along the hairline is determined by your genetics and hormones. Early signs of hair loss are difficult to detect because hair loss is gradual. You start losing it even when it doesn't look like it. By the time most people notice thinning areas and growing bald spots years have gone by and a significant amount of hair has already been lost. Early detection is key to getting the best results for hair restoration. Here are some early signs of hair loss and how you can slow the process.

During a 1-month period you notice large clumps of hair on your pillow, shower, or hairbrush

Our hair naturally grows and sheds in phases. A person typically loses anywhere between 50-100 hairs per day so it’s not uncommon to see some strands stuck in your brush or on the bathroom floor. However, if you notice significant shedding on your pillow when you wake up or find large clumps of hair in your hand when you shower or brush your hair it could be signs of hair loss. Proper scalp hygiene, exercise, and nutrition for your hair are crucial in slowing the start of thinning. You can use DHT-blocking hair care products or take oral medications that help stop further hair loss.

Noticeable change in your hairline or thinning of your hair

Genetic and hormonal balding typically happens in characteristic patterns. For men hair loss typically appears on the temples, along the hairline, and the top of the scalp. Most women tend experience thinning, weak hair and a widening part as signs of gradual permanent hair loss. If you notice a growing m-shaped hair line or brittle, thinning hair you may want to consult your doctor. Note that a widow’s peak or pointed hairline is genetic and not a sign of hair loss. To accurately check for hair loss, it’s always best to compare photos of your hair when it’s dry and un-styled. If you can compare two photos taken years apart and see that your hairline has receded or your part has grown noticeably wider, it’s a sign that you’re suffering from hair loss. Laser hair therapy or hair transplants are both viable treatment options for thinning hair. Plus, the earlier you catch hair loss and begin these treatments the better your results.

NEA offers proven effective treatments for hair loss

If your beginning to see more scalp and a receding hairline don’t ignore the signs. The earlier you begin treatments the more solutions you have and the better your results. Foods and Vitamins that help the hair’s health

How do we maintain healthy hair when we live such busy lives? That's a great question! By simply adding foods comprised of properties known to help hair health and growth, you may see an improvement in your body and your hair.  New England Associates knows that vitamins and minerals can make a difference. Which is why we offer our own line of products, HairStart® to help! Here are our top picks for optimum hair health of vitamins and minerals!

·       Vitamins (A, B, C, E)

·       Minerals (Copper and Zinc, Sulphur, Iron)

·       Protein

·       Oils (Rosemary and Coconut)

Vitamins

Vitamin A is important to the body because not only does it promote the growth of cells and tissues, but it is also necessary for the body to produce sebum — a natural oil that hydrates the scalp and hair strands. Vitamin A is produced by beta-carotene, found in yellow or orange fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, mango, carrots and squash.

Vitamin B comes in a number of varieties...So, which one(s) should you choose? Necessary for ultimate hair health are Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12 and Biotin — a water-soluble vitamin. These vitamins work together to benefit your hair, skin and even nails. B Vitamins can be found in whole grains, poultry, eggs and vegetables.

Vitamin C supports the production of collagen,  strengthening the hair follicles and blood vessels which supports the growth of healthier hair. Vitamin C also contributes to iron absorption, which helps in overall well being and beauty. Vitamin C can be found in foods such as oranges, broccoli, papaya, and blueberries.

Vitamin E and Vitamin C "protect" each other and are most effective when consumed together. Vitamin E protects the hair from the sun's harmful rays by assisting in the production of the nourishing protein, Keratin. It also increases blood vessels’ circulation to the scalp, supporting hair growth. Supporters of Vitamin E are almonds, avocado, kale, and spinach.

Minerals

Copper and Zinc also work together, and aid in absorption. Zinc supports the production of new cells (hair cells). Therefore, a lack of zinc can lead to a dry scalp, potentially leading to hair loss or thinning. Copper contributes to hair thickness and color of the hair, preventing a possible premature graying of the hair. However, these two have to be consumed in moderation because too much zinc interferes in copper’s absorption and too much copper is toxic to the body. A great way to consume a balanced portion of both minerals are nuts, peanuts, lentils and beans.

Another mineral important for hair health is Sulphur. This mineral is known as the “nature’s beauty mineral”. Containing multiple body benefiting properties, sulphur helps support blood circulation,  hair growth, ease skin inflammation, and assists in the absorption of vitamins. Although, present in the body, sulphur can only be obtained through good sources are protein rich foods, milk, garlic, seaweed and brussels sprouts.

Iron plays a vital role in hair health because it carries oxygen to the hair. An oxygen deficiency in the blood can affect the hair’s growth cycle and therefore increase the risk for hair loss. Some options for iron intake are meats in general, spinach, lentils, and broccoli.

Protein

More than ninety percent of our hair is made of protein, so having a diet with protein is essential for healthy hair. Protein can be found in meats in general, eggs, legumes and nuts.

Oils

Two oils that nourish, and give a healthier look to hair are rosemary oil and coconut oil. Rosemary oil can be used when shampooing, just add a few drops of it while washing the hair and then repeat the process. Coconut oil can be used as a hair mascara and should be applied before showering or before going to bed for the best results.

Hair Myths You Always Hear That Are Not Actually True

In the quest to avoid bad hair days there are tons of tips and hair care treatments that have been used and passed down for centuries. Unfortunately, from that there is also a ton of hair misinformation that makes properly caring for our manes even harder and can even cause more harm than good. We're here to tell you the real deal with your hair and debunk some common hair myths.

Myth: Frequent Shaving and Haircuts Will Make My Hair Grow Thicker or Faster

While regular trims get rid of split ends and can improve your hair’s health, it does not affect hair’s thickness or the speed at which it grows. How thick your hair is and the rate at which it grows is determined by your genes. Hair goes through a continuous growth cycle and each individual follicle is in a different part of this hair cycle. Besides, hair does not contain any nerve endings so there is no way for it to communicate with your body (or else haircuts would really hurt). So, while you may see the difference, your body has no way of knowing your hair has been cut or shaved.

Myth: Shampoo Will Make My Hair Grow Faster

As discussed with the first myth, your hair generally grows at a consistent rate determined by genetics and the hair’s growth cycle. So, any shampoos or conditioners that claim to speed up hair growth just aren’t true. However, there are certain hair treatments, paired with a healthy hair care regimen, that can improve your hair's health, thickness, and shine. Regularly, (not daily) shampooing keeps the scalp clean and free of dirt and excess sebum which can clog hair follicles and cause weak, brittle hair. Plus, having full and healthy hair gives the illusion of longer hair.

Myth: Plucking Gray Hairs Causes More Gray to Grow

Gray hair is the result of when cells in the hair stop producing pigment. These pigment lacking strands are transparent but appears gray because of the dead cells that make up the strand. However, you don’t necessarily want to start plucking away at your gray hairs either. Plucking your hair can possibly destroy the hair follicle and can lead to bald patches. To avoid premature graying, experts suggest quitting unhealthy habits like smoking and eating foods high in vitamins and nutrients essential for good hair health like B12, iron, and collagen. If you have a lot of grays, consider coloring your hair. Then again, there is no shame in going gray hair either. Many consider the “silver fox” look attractive and silver/gray is a trendy hair color choice today.

Myth: You Can Train Your Hair to Look How You Want

While straightening, blow drying, and combing can help to style you hair temporarily to look a certain way the pattern at which your hair grows does not change. The direction and texture that your hair grows is determined by-say it with me-your genetics. You can manipulate the hair already grown out of your hair follicles to take a certain shape or lay a certain way, but it won’t ever grow any different. Besides, over styling with heat or chemical processing to change your hair’s texture and shape can cause serious damage to your strands and cause them to break off. While changing up your look with correct styling techniques are okay give your hair a breather every once in a while, and embrace your natural hair.

If you are suffering from hair loss or want to maintain the hair you already have for longer consider coming to New England Associates. We offer affordable and effective hair restoration and replacement solutions for men and women. No matter your level of hair loss we can help. With NEA you’ll see longer, stronger, healthier hair. How to Protect Your Scalp from Skin Cancer

A large part of your hair’s health and regrowth ability is based on your scalp hygiene. A damaged or dirty scalp can slow or prevent hair growth causing thinning and hair loss. One of the major ways your scalp can get damaged is from the environment. With summer in full swing, damage from sun rays and high temperatures is more probable without proper protection. Even with a full head of hair you are not fully protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays. So how do you protect your scalp while still enjoying the sun and outdoors?

Your body needs protection from the sun, especially your scalp. In fact, your scalp is exposed to the sun more directly than any other body part. Without proper protection your scalp is susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer from being exposed to harmful UV rays. When your scalp is sunburned, it opens the pores to try and release heat to begin repairing itself. Hair products and natural hair oils can sink into the open pores and block them, trapping heat, and causing further damage. Damaged scalp and blocked hair follicles cause weak and brittle hair which can lead to hair loss. Skin cancer is a serious issue and, if left untreated, and turn potentially life threatening. If you spend time outside it’s important to check your head and hairline often for unusual bumps or spots. If your worried a bump or scab might be skin cancer speak to a dermatologist.

If you plan on spending any time outdoors during the day take measures to protect your hair and scalp. A hat will offer the best protection from the sun, especially if it's lined with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). Speaking of UV protection for clothing you can also use UV protection for the skin. Put sunblock on your scalp especially if you’re bald or have a lot of thinning areas. Pay special attention to the area where your hair is parted and gently massage a small amount into your scalp (don’t forget to reapply every few hours). You can also look for leave in conditioners with SPF in it. Lastly, if you’re going to be spending a moment outside avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. Sit under an umbrella or other shady spot. Following these rules helps your hair look much healthier and minimizes the risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

If your hair is dry, damaged, and thinning New England Associates can help. We have the best hair restoration and replacement solutions and are the only business of it’s kind in the area. How Lasers Can Grow Your Thinning Hair

Laser light has been used for an abundance of health and beauty practices. From eye surgery to hair removal this technology has grown to be used in many ways. As a matter of fact, lasers can also be used to grow hair as well. This method is called laser light therapy (LHT) and is a great solution for those who suffer from thinning, damaged hair.

This FDA approved treatment is non-surgical, pain free, and can be done in quick 30 minute sessions. You may start to see longer, stronger, healthier hair after only a few sessions!

When LHT therapy is combined with proper scalp and hygiene hair care products some clients may see even faster results. Our HairStart® products work for every hair type and contain numerous, potent DHT blocking inhibitors responsible for hair loss. These gentle cleansing and restorative products linked with laser treatments are proven effective to reduce and restore hair loss.

New England Associates® has helped thousands of men and women look their best since 1982. Hair Care for Social Distancing

During this time of social distancing many salons and barber shops are closed or severely limiting appointments. This means your hair is going without its usual maintenance and may be looking a little worse for wear. Many are still working from home during this time and having bad hair is not ideal for work video conference calls. Other than maintaining a healthy hair and scalp routine, there are things professional stylists say you can do to take care of your hair while self-isolating.

Fixing Faded Color and Roots
Obviously, your colored hair will start to fade without regular touch ups. Using box dyes or trying to bleach your own hair has a high potential of ending in disaster and further damaging your hair. If you’re worried about your roots or faded areas showing you can temporarily mask it by applying eyeshadow or mascara of a similar color and blend it into your hair using your fingers. If you need a quick fix for a video call you can throw on a colorful headscarf, stylish hat, or put your hair in a neat updo.

How to Avoid Split Ends
One way to avoid dry brittle hair is by not over washing your hair and letting it rest. Allowing your hair to be greasy hair for a couple days is not bad. Your hair needs those natural oils it produces to keep your hair moisturized. Washing your hair everyday strips, it of those natural oils which can lead to split ends. Drink plenty of water and apply hair masks or deep conditioners weekly to keep your strands moisturized. Being at home now is a perfect time to give your hair a break from styling. Put down the straighteners and hair dryers and let your natural hair air dry. If you want to put your hair up opt for soft hair ties, like scrunchies, and keep your updo lose.

Maintaining Hair Extensions
There are different types of extensions, and during a time like this, you may want to consider trading in those hair extensions for thicker and fuller hair by visiting our website and scheduling a free consultation.  Find out at all the solutions we can offer you in one place!

Look as Good as You Feel™!

Many men and women suffer from hair loss. While there are several reasons that lead to hair loss, such as age, stress, or hormonal imbalance your hair reflects your body’s overall health. One of the best ways to Look as Good as You Feel™ with your restored hair is to also incorporate regular exercise.  Daily exercise is not only good for the body, but it can also improve and strengthen your hair’s growth cycle. Here are some simple exercises* you can incorporate into your daily routine that are great for improving your health and your hair and scalp.

Cardio
Jogging, cycling, swimming, and HIIT (high-intensity interval training) are all great cardio workouts for getting the heart pumping and promoting blood flow all over the body. Doing any cardio exercise for at least a half hour daily increases blood circulation to your scalp. The scalp requires good blood flow to boost hair growth. Plus, while you’re sweating the pores in your scalp open up which helps to flush out toxins that are harmful to the hair.

Deep breathing
Practicing deep breathing provides the scalp with oxygen which help rejuvenate damaged hair and promote new hair growth. Deep breathing also reduces anxiety and stress which is one of the causes of hair loss. Take about 5-10 minutes to do various deep breathing exercises each day. Even better you can do them just about anywhere such as your daily commute or at work.

Inverted Exercises
Inversion of your body reverses blood flow towards the scalp and is also said to help with lymphatic drainage and balances hormones. This can help slow thinning hair and reduce hair loss. Elevate your feet above your head and hold them there or, if you’re able, perform completely inverted exercises such as headstands or handstands. Practicing yoga and stretching is a great workout for performing various types of inverted exercises for all fitness levels.

Massage
At the end of a long day or strenuous workout a massage is a great way to wind down and soothe your tired muscles. Massages are not just for the body but for the scalp as well. Massaging the scalp increase blood flow to the scalp, which circulates all the essential nutrients to the hair follicles and promotes growth. Using the pads of your fingers gently rotate your hands around the scalp for about 1-2 minutes. You can do it yourself or ask your partner to do it for you.
At New England Associates men and women have achieved longer, stronger, healthier hair! Many of our clients have renewed confidence which helps them make other changes in their life that are positive for them, like exercising.
If you suffer from damaged, thinning hair or hair loss we can help. We offer a variety of today’s best medical and non-medical hair restoration treatments. No matter your level of hair loss we can find a hair loss solution for you. We offer FREE, private hair and scalp examinations and consultations. Contact one of our offices to schedule yours today

*Before you begin any exercise or strenuous activity consult with your doctor first.

Hair Color Options That Won’t Damage Your Hair

Hair coloring has presented some of the biggest trends in recent years. It’s not just for covering up grays but is now used for fashion and expressing oneself. With the rise of social media and viral exposure many techniques and color effects have been created to achieve the next, coolest trend.  However, over-processing and regularly coloring hair can lead to dry, brittle strands and hair loss. If you want to change up your look without your hair suffering damage from harmful chemicals try these safer, healthier hair dye options.

Henna

Henna is a natural plant dye and a popular choice among those seeking a chemical free hair coloring option. Rather than damaging your hair, henna can condition it, which boost elasticity, strength and shine. It gives your hair a colorful tint without penetrating the hair shaft. It may wash out quicker than traditional dyes but it’s effective in coloring your hair without the harsh chemicals.

Semi-permanent hair color

If you’re looking for more variety of colors for your hair, using a semi-permanent hair rinse is the perfect solution. Semi-permanent hair color also does not penetrate the hair shaft which limits damage and breakage caused by bleach and other chemically altering options. Today’s semi-permanent options come in an array of trendy colors and shades and many brands also add in helpful ingredients for your hair such as aloe vera and vitamin E.
