Don’t Let Your Hair Hold You Back This Summer

Summer is here and the water is calling our names. Many of us have plans to spend weekends in the pool, ocean or lake but do not want the potential damage that the water, chlorine and the sun can cause. Whether you have just had one of our hair treatments, are thinking about getting one or just want to keep your hair protected, New England Associates® offers a vast line of products that can help combat the elements.

Swimmers & Summer Hair Care Bundle

NEA's Phase 4 shampoo removes mineral and chemical deposits caused by hard water, chlorine pools and chemical processing.

The Replenish Deep Conditioning Treatment is a custom formulation for extremely damaged hair designed to protect your hair from nature’s harsh elements by replenishing it with Provitamin B, Vitamin B & C.

NEA Protein Treatment Formula Spray will help to retain the substantive protein content of your hair and to leave it soft and manageable. This works best when applied after rinsing shampoo from your hair and before conditioning with cream conditioners.

The final product in the bundle is the NEA Conditioning Mist, a blend of unique ingredients that provides detangling, moisture, protein, protection from heat appliances, and reduces "frizzies" all at the same time.

This combination of products will keep you protected from all of your summer adventures. You can bring the NEA conditioning mist with you to spritz on your hair while out in the sun to create a natural moisture barrier between the elements and your hair.

It is important to rinse and wash your hair after a day in the water; you don’t want to leave the chlorine or other minerals in your hair too long.

Using the New England Associates® Shampoo, Replenish Deep Conditioning Treatment, Protein Treatment Formula Spray, and Conditioning Mist after a day in the sun will keep your hair hydrated all summer long.

What Makes African-American Hair Different

Different ethnic groups have noticeable differences in the structure, density, and growth of hair. The natural texture of African-American hair that has not been changed by products or chemicals or any other means, appears to be denser than other hair because of the shape in which it grows. However, this shape makes such hair very prone to breakage when it is combed or brushed.

Many African-Americans try to straighten their hair with relaxers of some kind. Doing this over a prolonged period of time can lead to breakage and thinning of the hair. Popular African-American hairstyles such as cornrows, locks, and braids can pull on the hair and also result in breakage and thinning. Excessive chemical and product use can be harmful to the hair and scalp and cause conditions such as Alopecia, balding at the edges, dry scalp, and bruises on the scalp.

The professionals at New England Associates® know how to treat hair and scalp conditions of all types and have been doing so for almost 40 years. Keeping hair moisturized, trimmed at the ends, and using very little heat while styling can sometimes help in preventing breakage and other problems.

Keep in mind that if you are experiencing hair loss of any type, you should not diagnose yourself. The best thing you can do is to see a hair expert in order to correctly identify the reason for your symptoms. You can contact New England Associates® right now. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss and making the right choice to solve it matters. We encourage you to take the time and review your options then come in for a no-cost, no-obligation private hair loss consultation.

Early Signs of Balding and How to Fight It

Did you know hair loss can start at almost any age once you enter adulthood? The primary cause of hair loss is both male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness, affecting almost 50% of adult males and 25% of adult women. The onset of baldness and thinning along the hairline is determined by your genetics and hormones. Early signs of hair loss are difficult to detect because hair loss is gradual. You start losing it even when it doesn't look like it. By the time most people notice thinning areas and growing bald spots years have gone by and a significant amount of hair has already been lost. Early detection is key to getting the best results for hair restoration. Here are some early signs of hair loss and how you can slow the process.

During a 1-month period you notice large clumps of hair on your pillow, shower, or hairbrush

Our hair naturally grows and sheds in phases. A person typically loses anywhere between 50-100 hairs per day so it’s not uncommon to see some strands stuck in your brush or on the bathroom floor. However, if you notice significant shedding on your pillow when you wake up or find large clumps of hair in your hand when you shower or brush your hair it could be signs of hair loss. Proper scalp hygiene, exercise, and nutrition for your hair are crucial in slowing the start of thinning. You can use DHT-blocking hair care products or take oral medications that help stop further hair loss.

Noticeable change in your hairline or thinning of your hair

Genetic and hormonal balding typically happens in characteristic patterns. For men hair loss typically appears on the temples, along the hairline, and the top of the scalp. Most women tend experience thinning, weak hair and a widening part as signs of gradual permanent hair loss. If you notice a growing m-shaped hair line or brittle, thinning hair you may want to consult your doctor. Note that a widow’s peak or pointed hairline is genetic and not a sign of hair loss. To accurately check for hair loss, it’s always best to compare photos of your hair when it’s dry and un-styled. If you can compare two photos taken years apart and see that your hairline has receded or your part has grown noticeably wider, it’s a sign that you’re suffering from hair loss. Laser hair therapy or hair transplants are both viable treatment options for thinning hair. Plus, the earlier you catch hair loss and begin these treatments the better your results.

NEA offers proven effective treatments for hair loss

If your beginning to see more scalp and a receding hairline don’t ignore the signs. The earlier you begin treatments the more solutions you have and the better your results. How to Manage PCOS Related Hair Loss

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, affects 1 in 10 women of child-bearing age. What exactly is PCOS and how does it affect the body? PCOS is an imbalance of sex hormones and primarily affects your levels of estrogen produced in the body. Women suffering from PCOS can experience fertility issues, weight gain, irregular periods, and excess facial and body hair. While there is excessive body and facial hair growth, hair loss on the scalp is also a common symptom among women with PCOS. PCOS is already a challenging time for women who are diagnosed and can cause added psychological distress for those who experience hair loss. However, there are things you can do to slow hair loss and stimulate new hair growth.

Women suffering from PCOS have increased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for hair loss in both male- and female-pattern baldness. Women with PCOS can experience thinning hair and bald spots especially in the frontal and the vertex region of the scalp, resulting in female pattern baldness. Any hair lost due to PCOS won’t grow back on its own. However, hair loss can be managed, and thinning areas hidden with simple lifestyle changes and treatments to encourage new growth.

New England Associates offers numerous proven effective treatments and hair loss solutions for women. Our HairStart® Hair Care treatment program is especially great for women experiencing thinning hair and PCOS related hair loss. Our dermatological grade products are packed full of minoxidil, essential nutrients, and other DHT-blocking ingredients so you can cleanse and repair weak, damaged hair at home. Combined with our quick and pain-free laser hair therapy you’ll see fuller, thicker, healthier hair.

For more severe hair loss our non-surgical hair replacement solutions can give you the hair of your dreams without damaging glue or tape. Our hair replacement systems look completely natural because they are made of real hair. You can cut, color and style your hair to your desired look and enjoy your favorite activities (yes, even water related ones) without worrying about bald spots or thinning areas showing. You can gain your hair back over time or all in one session. No one will know what you had done.

You can’t hide hair loss forever so why waste hours in the mirror styling hair to cover bald spots and thinning areas? Everyone’s hair loss situation is different, and we can customize a treatment plan for your specific type of hair loss. If your suffering from hormone related hair loss contact us today for your FREE, private consultation and hair and scalp exam.

If you’re experiencing excessive hair loss and other symptoms related to PCOS talk to your doctor.

Foods and Vitamins that help the hair’s health

How do we maintain healthy hair when we live such busy lives? That's a great question! By simply adding foods comprised of properties known to help hair health and growth, you may see an improvement in your body and your hair.  New England Associates knows that vitamins and minerals can make a difference. Which is why we offer our own line of products, HairStart® to help! Here are our top picks for optimum hair health of vitamins and minerals!

·       Vitamins (A, B, C, E)

·       Minerals (Copper and Zinc, Sulphur, Iron)

·       Protein

·       Oils (Rosemary and Coconut)

Vitamins

Vitamin A is important to the body because not only does it promote the growth of cells and tissues, but it is also necessary for the body to produce sebum — a natural oil that hydrates the scalp and hair strands. Vitamin A is produced by beta-carotene, found in yellow or orange fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, mango, carrots and squash.

Vitamin B comes in a number of varieties...So, which one(s) should you choose? Necessary for ultimate hair health are Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12 and Biotin — a water-soluble vitamin. These vitamins work together to benefit your hair, skin and even nails. B Vitamins can be found in whole grains, poultry, eggs and vegetables.

Vitamin C supports the production of collagen,  strengthening the hair follicles and blood vessels which supports the growth of healthier hair. Vitamin C also contributes to iron absorption, which helps in overall well being and beauty. Vitamin C can be found in foods such as oranges, broccoli, papaya, and blueberries.

Vitamin E and Vitamin C "protect" each other and are most effective when consumed together. Vitamin E protects the hair from the sun's harmful rays by assisting in the production of the nourishing protein, Keratin. It also increases blood vessels’ circulation to the scalp, supporting hair growth. Supporters of Vitamin E are almonds, avocado, kale, and spinach.

Minerals

Copper and Zinc also work together, and aid in absorption. Zinc supports the production of new cells (hair cells). Therefore, a lack of zinc can lead to a dry scalp, potentially leading to hair loss or thinning. Copper contributes to hair thickness and color of the hair, preventing a possible premature graying of the hair. However, these two have to be consumed in moderation because too much zinc interferes in copper’s absorption and too much copper is toxic to the body. A great way to consume a balanced portion of both minerals are nuts, peanuts, lentils and beans.

Another mineral important for hair health is Sulphur. This mineral is known as the “nature’s beauty mineral”. Containing multiple body benefiting properties, sulphur helps support blood circulation,  hair growth, ease skin inflammation, and assists in the absorption of vitamins. Although, present in the body, sulphur can only be obtained through good sources are protein rich foods, milk, garlic, seaweed and brussels sprouts.

Iron plays a vital role in hair health because it carries oxygen to the hair. An oxygen deficiency in the blood can affect the hair’s growth cycle and therefore increase the risk for hair loss. Some options for iron intake are meats in general, spinach, lentils, and broccoli.

Protein

More than ninety percent of our hair is made of protein, so having a diet with protein is essential for healthy hair. Protein can be found in meats in general, eggs, legumes and nuts.

Oils

Two oils that nourish, and give a healthier look to hair are rosemary oil and coconut oil. Rosemary oil can be used when shampooing, just add a few drops of it while washing the hair and then repeat the process. Coconut oil can be used as a hair mascara and should be applied before showering or before going to bed for the best results.
