What’s the Deal with Gray Hair?

According to a 2005 review article in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology reported that Caucasians start to go gray in their mid-30s, on average, Asians in their late-30s, and Africans in their mid-40s. Gray hair is rumored to be caused by stress but it is more attributed to aging and heredity.

As hair follicles age it affects the amount of catalase. Catalase is important because it breaks down hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicle. Hydrogen peroxide is what makes the hair turn grey, and without catalase to break it down it takes over the color of your hair.

Scientist have also discovered that some men and women are born with an inherited tendency to go gray before their time. Therefore, we see people in their 20’s with full heads of gray hair. Actors such as George Clooney, Richard Gere and Gary Lineker all went gray very early on.

The only thing worse than gray hair is no hair! At New England Associates®, we are committed to helping each client grow the hair of their dreams! From surgical to non-surgical, we offer all the procedures that will help you Look As Good As You Feel!™

Curly Vs. Straight Hair, What Gives?

Have you ever wondered why some people have perfectly flat straight hair and others have heads full of curls? Not satisfied with the general "its genetics" answer? Then you've come to the right blog post.

While yes, between 85-95% of the texture of your hair can be ascribed to DNA, that's not the entire story. Your hair is made up of two main parts, the follicle and the shaft. The shaft being the visible hair that you see coming out of the scalp, and the follicle being the sub dermal origin of the hair. Think of it as a bulb to an orchid. It's the follicle that is the main culprit behind whether or not your hair is straight or curly.

What many people don't know is that not all hair follicles are the same. People who have straight hair have follicles that emerge straight out of the scalp. Those who's follicles emerge from the scalp at an angle have curly hair. The more acute the acute the angle of the follicle is the curlier the hair will be. But it gets even more involved than that; follicles that emerge straight out of the scalp tend to be almost perfectly symmetrical and lead to circular hair shafts. Those that grow at an angle produce oval shaped hair shafts that tend to curl.

The difference in the shape of the hair also leads to other contributing factors of how curly or straight your hair is. Within the follicle there are oil secreting glands, called sabaceous glands, that coat and lubricate the shaft. Straight hair shafts get coated more easily and evenly, while curly hair shafts are more difficult for the oil to travel down, leading to a lopsided application of oil that tends to be on the inside of the curl. This uneven application of oil also leads to the dry and frizzy nature that is associated with curly hair.

Luckily New England Associates® is here to help you make the most of your curly or straight hair. With our line of HairStart™ products there's something for everybody. Whether your hair is straight, but thin and delicate, or is curly but frizzy and dry, our HairStart™ line of products can help your hair be the best that it can be.

Laser Hair Therapy Worked for Joyce

Joyce started losing her hair due to an under-active thyroid. Her thyroid was not producing enough hormones which caused her hair to start thinning and eventually fall out. She noticed she was losing hair on the back of her head and was afraid she was going to develop thin hair and a visible scalp.

Like most people who experience hair loss, Joyce was unaware of her options and was confused about which route to take. Joyce scheduled her free hair and scalp consultation and it was discovered that laser hair therapy was the best choice for her specific condition. Laser hair therapy is FDA approved and completely painless.

Joyce first noticed her amazing hair transformation when she was blow drying her hair. The back of her head which at one time was experiencing hair loss and thinning was full of longer and thicker hair. Joyce regained the full head of hair she dreamed of by matching her to the perfect treatment plan that was tailored to her specific hair loss. For your free hair and scalp consultation call New England Associates® today at 1-866-424-7782 or visit us online at http://newenglandassociates.com/index.htm.

Why Do Men Lose Their Hair?

It is common knowledge that men lose their hair faster than women, but why is that? Unfortunately for men, the male sexual hormone testosterone is what impacts hair the most, therefore men lose their hair easier than women.

How Common is Hair Loss in Men?

If you are a man and notice your hair thinning, you are not alone. 30% of men notice hair loss by the age of 30 and ½ of men will experience hair loss by the age of 50.

Why Does It Happen?

Most know men’s hair loss as Male Pattern Baldness. Natural hair loss is scientifically called androgenic alopecia. This is where the body converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. DHT is a hormone that causes the hair follicle to shrink and die, making the hair thinner and shorter and ultimately causes the hair to fall out.

What Can You Do About It?

If you are one of the many men who are experiencing hair loss, New England Associates® can help! We offer many solutions that range from non-surgical hair grafting to HairStart Laser Hair Therapy. Come in and schedule a FREE microscopic hair and scalp consultation and our team of experts will help you find the right treatment for you. NEA offers Hair Transplantation, Non Surgical Hair Grafting, Laser Hair Therapy, and HairStart Essentials™ products to name just a few options available to you.

How to Protect Your Hair from Chlorine

There is nothing better than swimming in a pool on a scorching summer day. Although hanging out in the pool is fun, it can have damaging effects on your hair.

According to Desalinatedwater.com, chlorine is added to pools to keep the water clean and free of bacteria and viruses. With repeated and prolonged exposure, chlorine may turn hair a greenish tint, dry it out and cause breakage.

Luckily, New England Associates® has created a bundle of hair care products that protect against the damaging effects of chlorine. The Swimmers & Mineral-Busting Bundle features four amazing products.

  • NEA Phase 4 Shampoo- removes mineral and chemical deposits caused by hard water, chlorine pools and chemical processing.

  • NEA Replenish Deep Conditioning Treatment-  treats extremely damaged hair and helps protect your hair from nature’s harsh elements.

  • NEA Protein Spray- helps retain the substantive protein content of your hair and to leave it soft and manageable

  • NEA Conditioning Mist- provides detangling, moisture, protein, protection from heat appliances, and reduces frizzy hair

New England Associates® bundles products that are formulated to work together and help maintain healthy hair. For more information about our hair care products, visit our website at www.newenglandassociates.com.
