Daily Habits You Have That Contribute to Hair Loss

While it’s normal to lose some hair strands daily, if you’re noticing your hair coming out in clumps or bald spots getting gradually larger, you could be suffering from hair loss. Even from an early age men and women are stressed about their appearance and combating hair loss. If you’re struggling with a diminishing hair line but have no medical conditions causing hair loss it may be everyday bad hair care habits that are damaging your strands and causing thinning.

You wear your hair pulled back everyday
Many of us love a cute top knot but it could be doing significant damage to your hair. Wearing your hair in tight ponytails, updos or braids causes tension on your strands. Constant tension from buns or tight hair extensions can cause traction alopecia which is gradual thinning caused by too much force on the hair. If you must pull your hair up every day try loosening the pulled back look around your hairline. If you wear hair extensions make sure your stylist doesn’t make them too tight and give your hair a break for a week or more in between styles.

Not gentle enough when styling
We’re sure you’ve heard that pulling and tugging on your hair especially when detangling isn’t good, but how do you treat your hair when styling? Constantly blow drying and styling with heated hair tools makes your hair brittle and prone to breakage. Instead, let your locks air dry when wet and go for a no-heat hairstyle two to three times a week. Also avoid brushing your hair when it is wet since that is when it is most susceptible to damage. However, for those with curly hair it can be easier to detangle when hair is wet. If that’s the case, detangle your hair as much as possible before you get in the shower. If you need to brush wet hair use a wide tooth comb and apply plenty of conditioner! Divide hair into sections, then starting at the ends gently brush in short downwards strokes working your way up to the root.

You wash your hair everyday
While this may seem kind of gross, there is no need to wash your hair every day. Shampoo is meant to clean the hair and scalp; sulfates especially strips the natural oils from your hair and can dry it out causing hair loss. If your hair is on the oily side or you sweat at the gym everyday, just rinse your hair with lukewarm water or buy a good dry shampoo and spray it on your roots and scalp to remove any excess build up.

Coloring and bleaching your hair
Over-processing hair with chemical treatments like perms and bleaching enlarges the pores in your hair causing dryness and breakage. Over time, styling with chemical treatments can cause damage to the hair shaft leading to hair loss. Be sure to use a moisturizing hair mask weekly on treated hair and wash with cool water to make the color last longer so you don’t need as many treatments. Also, instead of getting a full color treatment every time you head to the salon have your stylist apply a semi-permanent hair gloss to revive your color instead.

Celebrate Independence and Healthier Hair for All!

If you look at pictures of our country’s founding fathers and first few presidents, they all tend to have something in common: white hair and receding hairlines. Men and women have been dealing with unwanted hair loss for centuries. In fact, throughout the 18th century powdered wigs were commonly worn among men and women to hide thinning hair and premature balding. White powdered wigs were worn by wealthy and upper-class men which also served to showcase their prominent status. By the late 1700’s women of upper status were wearing larger and more elaborate wigs powdered in pastel colors like light pink or blue. However, wigs were expensive to make and extremely uncomfortable. Women especially would suffer from neck pain and swollen temples as most wigs would stand at least a foot tall. They were rarely washed and often attracted lice and smelled awful. Wig powder would be mixed with scented oils such as lavender or orange to combat the smell but was costly to make. Back then hair loss solutions were not readily available, expensive and tedious.

Today covering up bald spots and thinning hair is easier and more affordable. The technology of modern hair replacement solutions is amazing!
