Three Types of Alopecia: Areata, Totalis, Universalis

It is natural to lose or shed hair on a daily basis throughout your lifetime. However, it is more alarming when the amount lost becomes larger than normal or even comes out in apparent chunks. There is a term for such a loss: Alopecia.

What is Alopecia?

According to the American Hair Loss Association, Alopecia is the medical term for excessive or abnormal hair loss. There are varieties of forms of Alopecia. The following are considered to be autoimmune disorders. The loss of a person’s hair happens because the person’s immune system mistakenly attacks their body, or rather, their hair follicles.

Alopecia Areata: Alopecia Areata is a condition that occurs in patches anywhere on the body.

Alopecia Totalis: Alopecia Totalis results in the total of hair on the scalp. This can be at the scalp only. It can be considered an intermediary between Areata and Universalis.

Alopecia Universalis: Alopecia Universalis is the more severe more of Alopecia Areata. This condition is characterized by the complet loss of hair on the scalp AND body. It is also considered to occur in some genetically predisposed people.

Top 3 Products From Our Online Store!

New England Associates (NEA) has been helping men and women with their loss since 1982. We are grateful to have our online store as another useful outlet to further service individuals to meet their goals of overcoming hair loss. The following are the top three popular products purchased:
  • HairStart® Coenzyme stimulates the production of protein at the follicle level, reduce activity of the sebaceous glands, and neutralize the activity of Alpha-Reductase (the enzyme responsible for the transformation of testosterone into dyhydrotosterone or DHT). In addition, it delivers “hair growth” nutrients to the follicle and soothes dry, itchy scalp.

Hair loss is not something we choose but gaining hair is. There are many procedures available today that can help you gain the look you want - some are medical but many are not. Here at NEA, we are committed to finding the right process for you and putting the problems of hair loss behind you, once and for all! Smoking and Your Hair

Many people who smoke cigarettes make a New Year’s resolution to quit around this time of the year.

Most people are aware of many of the health dangers of smoking, but not everybody is aware of the toll that smoking takes on their hair. Health officials have done laboratory experiments which proved that after three months of exposure, most mice developed areas of alopecia and grey hair compared to mice that were not exposed.

We wrote more about smoking and hair loss last winter but something else to consider is the emotional and psychological impact of hair loss and balding. There are lots of reasons why people could lose hair and quitting smoking would help eliminate one of those reasons, which could help people feel better about themselves and perhaps help lead them to some other common New Year’s resolutions of exercising and going to the gym.

If you are a former smoker and are concerned about the health of your hair now that you've quit, we can help. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify any problems and help you review your options and solutions.
If you are interested in discussing more with an expert, contact New England Associates® today. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss, and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.
