What’s the Deal with Gray Hair?

According to a 2005 review article in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology reported that Caucasians start to go gray in their mid-30s, on average, Asians in their late-30s, and Africans in their mid-40s. Gray hair is rumored to be caused by stress but it is more attributed to aging and heredity.

As hair follicles age it affects the amount of catalase. Catalase is important because it breaks down hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicle. Hydrogen peroxide is what makes the hair turn grey, and without catalase to break it down it takes over the color of your hair.

Scientist have also discovered that some men and women are born with an inherited tendency to go gray before their time. Therefore, we see people in their 20’s with full heads of gray hair. Actors such as George Clooney, Richard Gere and Gary Lineker all went gray very early on.
