With the first snowfalls of the season and sub-freezing
temperatures in New England recently, it’s time to break out the winter hats.
Keep in mind that not all hats are good for your hair’s health and appearance
because hats can lead to static and squished curls among other things.
If you have curly or wavy hair, don’t wear hats that stick close to your head such as a ski hat because they will squash curls and any volume that you may have. Instead, think about using a tam, beret, fedora, trilby, or any other loosely-knit hat that doesn't press down or cling to your head so you have enough space to maintain the shape of your hair.

Also think about the fabric of the hat. No matter what kind
of hair you have, you don’t want something like wool that is rough and can snag
your hair because that can lead to split ends and damage to your hair. Softer fabrics
like cashmere, silk, and angora are better. If you must wear a wool hat,
however, try lining the inside of the hat with a softer fabric such as
silk.
If you have longer hair, you can loosely twist it into a
rolled bun or tuck it up under the hat to try to limit flattening.
To reduce static, you can try using dryer sheets inside the
hat or applying a styling product such as Moisturizing
Formula Conditioner or Conditioning
Mist from New England Associates® along the inside of the hat and around
the hat band.
If you feel that your hair is becoming excessively dry or
damaged, or if your scalp becomes dry or irritated from wearing a winter hat,
you should consider having your hair and scalp examined by a trained expert
to see if there are any potential long-term problems to be aware of. Early
diagnosis and early treatment are always a good idea, regardless of the
situation.
If you are interested in a no cost, no obligation private examination,
contact New
England Associates® today. At New England
Associates®, how you feel about your hair and making the right choice to solve
any problems, matters.
