OMG! Justin Bieber Dyes Hair Blonde!

There was buzz around the Internet and the celebrity gossip sites about Justin Bieber dying his hair blonde last week. While it isn’t always a bad thing to change your hair color once in a while, here are some things to consider before going forward:

• Hair dyes can cause problems such as burning, itching, redness, or raw scalp skin. Other more severe problems include swelling in the face, trouble breathing, hair damage, and hair loss.

• There are different types of hair dyes. Some are just temporary and will wash out with shampoo while others are more permanent and cannot be washed-out.

• Keep hair dyes out of the reach of children.

• If you have long hair and are considering donating it for charity in the future, be advised that some of the most popular organizations do not accept hair that has been dyed or bleached or otherwise chemically treated.

Here are some ways that you can use hair dye more safely:

• Always follow all directions carefully and pay attention to all cautions and warnings on the labels and instructions.

• Do a test on a small patch on your body before dying your hair. Apply a tiny bit of the dye on an inconspicuous spot and leave it there for two days. If you get a rash, do not use that dye on your hair.

• Do not leave dye on longer than the directions say you should.

• Thoroughly rinse your scalp with water after dyeing.

• Wear gloves when you apply hair dye.

• Don’t mix different hair dye products.

Never dye your eyebrows or eyelashes. The FDA does not allow it because it can hurt your eyes and possibly even make you go blind.

If you are considering a major hair color change like Justin did, here are some things to consider:

• Let a professional do it at a salon.

• Think about your skin tone and eye color and choose a color that will complement and enhance your natural features. Some colors can highlight those features as well as camouflage other features. For example if you have wrinkles and/or circles under your eyes, you should avoid very dark hair colors because those tend to draw attention to shadows and lines in one's face.

• If you're thinking about a major hair color overhaul, you will probably need to change your makeup colors as well. Typically, the lighter the hair color, the lighter the makeup and the darker the hair color, the darker the makeup.

• Consider your emotional status. If you just broke up with someone, or are really angry, upset or sad, lost a loved one, or lost your job, or are going through any kind of traumatic experience, you should really avoid a drastic permanent change. You can always wait until things calm down and try the change at a better time in your life so you don’t regret doing something that you can’t easily fix right now.

• People are going to notice. You should be mentally prepared for comments and feedback which may not always be positive.

• Think about the health of your hair. If your hair is compromised in any way now, coloring could make it worse. A professional should be able to let you know if your hair is healthy and strong enough for a change.

If you suspect that you may have hurt your hair or scalp, you should contact an expert who has been specifically trained in hair and scalp issues. The professionals at New England Associates® can perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify any problems and help you review your options and solutions. Top 10 Balding Myths

There are many rumors about male pattern baldness that aren't completely accurate. Below are the top 10 myths about balding. http://www.askmen.com/top_10/fitness/top-10-balding-myths.html

 10. Balding only happens to older men:
Young men cling to this idea, however male pattern baldness can happen in a young man’s teens. It's been said that the earlier on it happens, the more severe it gets later on.

9. It's inherited from mom’s side:
Wrong. It can come from either side of the family.

8. Excessive use of gel and hairspray can cause balding:
No evidence supports this theory. Gel on!

7.  Cutting your hair can result in thicker hair:
It’s just an illusion due to having a thicker circumference of hair at the scalp.

6. Tanning beds can contribute to balding:
It can contribute to many other problems, but not balding.

5.  You can grow new hair follicles:
The number of hair follicles you were born with is all you get. You can only increase that number by way of, what else, transplantation, which is considered just one of a few permanent solutions for hair loss. 4.  Stress can lead to balding:
Not balding, but different stages of hair loss depending on the person.

3.  Too much shampooing can cause balding:
Can’t be proven or disproven. Shampooing daily really depends on your hair type and personal preference to wash it or not.

2. With high testosterone comes balding:
The overproduction of dihydrotestosterone or DHT, can be a possibility for male pattern baldness.

1. Evil hats can make you go bald:
Not even a little. If it did, everyone in the Major Leagues would be bald.

Choosing the Right Winter Hat

With the first snowfalls of the season and sub-freezing temperatures in New England recently, it’s time to break out the winter hats. Keep in mind that not all hats are good for your hair’s health and appearance because hats can lead to static and squished curls among other things.

If you have curly or wavy hair, don’t wear hats that stick close to your head such as a ski hat because they will squash curls and any volume that you may have. Instead, think about using a tam, beret, fedora, trilby, or any other loosely-knit hat that doesn't press down or cling to your head so you have enough space to maintain the shape of your hair.
Also think about the fabric of the hat. No matter what kind of hair you have, you don’t want something like wool that is rough and can snag your hair because that can lead to split ends and damage to your hair. Softer fabrics like cashmere, silk, and angora are better. If you must wear a wool hat, however, try lining the inside of the hat with a softer fabric such as silk.

If you have longer hair, you can loosely twist it into a rolled bun or tuck it up under the hat to try to limit flattening.

To reduce static, you can try using dryer sheets inside the hat or applying a styling product such as Moisturizing Formula Conditioner or  Conditioning Mist from New England Associates® along the inside of the hat and around the hat band.

If you feel that your hair is becoming excessively dry or damaged, or if your scalp becomes dry or irritated from wearing a winter hat, you should consider having your hair and scalp examined by a trained expert to see if there are any potential long-term problems to be aware of. Early diagnosis and early treatment are always a good idea, regardless of the situation.

If you are interested in a no cost, no obligation private examination, contact New England Associates® today. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair and making the right choice to solve any problems, matters.

Winter Hair Care Guide

Winter has arrived and so has its bitter winds! As a result, your hair will unfortunately pay the price. However, have no fear; here are a few hair care tips to keep in mind this winter season. http://www.longlocks.com/winter-hair-care-tips.htm

1. Condition, like a lot.
Your hair lacks moisture with the combination of dry heat and cold weather. With no moisture, means dry hair, which can lead to breakage.

2.  Avoid the heat.
Hair tools such as blow dryers and flat irons dry your hair out even more. If you can't skip these steps in your grooming routine, add a heat protectant spray instead.

3. Avoid chemicals.
Do not dye your hair with peroxide-laden color or perm it during this time. This action will do more harm than good.

4. Clarify a bit.
When there is buildup in your hair from products such as hairsprays, mousses, gels, and even hard water and mineral deposits, we clarify.  A clarifying shampoo helps remove this build up, restore shine and gives your hair a fresh start.

5. Cover up!
It’s going to be cold, so bring out your winter accessories. It’s a great time to be stylish with this season’s scarves and hats.

6. Delicate state.
Your hair is in a delicate state now, especially with the lack of moisture. When combing your hair, don’t overdo it. Brush with care.

7. Trim often.
Keep your hair looking and feeling healthy by giving a visit to your stylist for a quick trim every 6-8 weeks. Visit one of the professional stylists at New England Associates! http://hairstart.com/contact_us.htm

9. Water temperature is key.
Searing hot water is bad, but lukewarm or room temperature is okay to use when bathing. Hot water may cause hair loss by opening up hair pores and loosening the hair follicle from the root. As a result, when you dry your hair or comb through it, more strands than usual may fall out.
