Certain Hairstyles Blamed for Hair Loss in Women

A recent news item from Houston, Texas includes a warning from a doctor saying that certain hairstyles could lead to dangerous infections and permanent hair loss.

A woman in that area developed a serious scalp infection after she had a weave sewn in at someone's house rather than going to a salon. The doctor in the news article says that this is part of “a growing epidemic among African-American women” and that he sees up to 10 women a day for it. But it is preventable.

When a weave is sewn too tightly, it can lead to a bacterial infection as it pulls on your own hair. Treatments for the infection could include steroids and antibiotics, but the hair may be permanently damaged.

Another problem is over-processing, which could be helped by having relaxers done professionally at salons not more than once every few months.

If you experience pain, tightness, swelling, puss, or bleeding, you should see a doctor right away and then contact a hair care specialist who has been specifically trained in hair and scalp conditions. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify any problems and help you review your options and solutions. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private consultation.

Taking Care of Your Hair During the Colder Months

It's important to take care of your hair as the seasons change. Winter tends to leave your hair dry, brittle and susceptible to breakage, so being prepared is a necessity! Prep your locks this winter by following these healthy hair tips!

When showering make sure that the water isn’t too hot. It may feel good to take a nice hot shower when the temperature outside is freezing, but the extreme heat may end up damaging your hair. Also, when showering don’t shampoo your hair every day. Give your hair a break so it doesn’t lose its natural oils by over washing.

Limit the amount of blow drying you do to your hair after you shower. Constantly blow drying your hair may cause it to become more brittle and weak.  If you must blow dry your hair then use a leave-in conditioner to help protect your hair.

Try having an easy to manage haircut. The less time you spend messing with your hair, the stronger it will become and you won’t have to worry as much about breakage. If temperatures are extreme enough outside, make sure to wear a hat, beanie or something else to cover your hair and protect it against the cold.

The products you use on your hair can greatly affect the luster, texture, and strength of your hair, as well. Check out some of our amazing hair products to keep your hair healthy all year long!

Fall Foods Good for Hair and Skin

Around this time of year we see many different colorful fruits and vegetables all around us. Not only are they appealing to the eye, many of them are good for our hair and skin.

Oil from pumpkin seeds is full of vitamin E, zinc, omega 3- and 6- fatty acids, and antioxidants. It can help our skin and it can possibly increase hair growth because it inhibits an enzyme that may stop or slow hair growth by producing Dihyrdotestosterone (DHT).

Green apples have antioxidants that help our skin. Squash contains a lot of vitamin C and has beta-carotene that gets converted into vitamin A which is an antioxidant our body needs for our skin. Cranberries have vitamin A and vitamin C which are good for our hair. Pomegranate seed oil has a high content of an acid that helps strengthen hair by increasing blood circulation in the scalp.

If you are not a fan of such foods, you can get similar nutrition with HairStart® Maximum Growth Therapy and HairStart® Essentials™. Each contains various vitamins and minerals (among other things) that help to make hair stronger and stimulate new growth. If you are unsure which would be the better choice for you, you can discuss it with an expert who has been specifically trained in hair growth. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp and help identify potential nutritional deficiencies.

At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss, and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.

California Grandmother Going through Chemo Knits ‘Hair’ for Herself

A grandmother in San Jose, California, who is a big San Francisco Giants fan, came up with an unusual way to get “hair” for herself after losing her natural hair to chemo.

71 year-old Rosemary Capitolo, an avid knitter, came up with the idea of knitting herself some orange hair when her favorite baseball team played in the World Series last month. She combined it with a Giants baseball cap, put on sunglasses ready to leave the house, and took a picture of herself which she posted online. Her granddaughter then tweeted it and it has since caught the attention of more than 75,000 viewers.

“I think what people are picking up on is an attitude,” said Capitolo in published news reports. “An attitude that you can keep living with cancer. You do what the doctors tell you and then wake up each day, love your family and live.”

Rosemary came up with a very unique solution for herself. No matter what the reason is, it is never easy seeing your hair go away and finding more and more of it on your pillow or in your shower drain. But since not everyone has the knitting skills that Rosemary has, New England Associates® can help.

If you are experiencing hair loss for any reason – medically-related or not, the best first step is to contact an expert who has been specifically trained in hair loss. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify the cause of your symptoms and help you review your options and solutions.

No Shave November

When thinking of “ No-Shave November,” or “Movember,” you might have of trail of thoughts leading to the comments you or your guy friends might have made, like  “it's cold and my beard keeps my face warm,” or “it makes me look like Chuck Norris."

Some may say it’s an excuse for guys to slack in the grooming department or that they're channeling their inner lumber jack.

However, the American Cancer Society is using this idea in a more philanthropic way.

FACT:  More than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. It can strike at ANY age. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S., which means that it accounts for nearly 1 out of every 4 deaths. (http://www.cancer.org/)

The American Cancer Society is using No-Shave November this year as a unique way to raise cancer awareness. Hopefully this fundraiser will have an amazing turn out that will propel this event into an annual tradition.

It’s a very clever idea to "grow" awareness with hair. The premise of this is to increase awareness by “embracing your hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free.” Donate the money that you would have spent on shaving and grooming for a month to teach cancer prevention, save lives and support those who are fighting this disease. (http://www.no-shave.org/

While this seems like something that’s only geared towards men – it’s not. Both men and women are more than welcome to join the cause by making donations. Put that facial hair to good use and donate this year!

Always help spread the word. The accumulation of donations means an increase in resources to prevent and fight cancer.
