Tips to Save Your Colored Hair from Damage

Hair dying is one of the most popular hair styling trends right now especially during the summertime. From balayage, to pale pastels and funky multi-colors people of all ages are looking for ways to showcase their trendy hairstyles. While dying hair is a fun and creative way to show off your personal style it’s also very easy to overdo it and damage your hair.  Here are some important tips on ways to protect and maintain colored hair so you can make fewer salon trips and spend all the money you saved at the next big music festival or on your next vacation destination.  New England Associates® offers the products and solutions to help you keep your hair healthy!

Wash Less Often
After you dye your hair, your stylist will typically recommend not washing your hair for at least two days. While this may seem gross it’s important in maintaining color for the long haul. Washing your hair every day is unnecessary, whether you color your hair or not, but if you sweat a lot or tend to have greasier hair using a dry shampoo is a great alternative. If you want to preserve your new color only wash your hair when necessary.

Conditioner is Your Friend
Bleaching hair opens the cells in your follicles which makes it harder for your hair to hold onto moisture so it’s important to regain and maintain that moisture. On a wash day, wet your hair, put a moisturizing conditioner  through your hair, and then shampoo directly on top of the conditioner. Doing this puts a barrier between your color and the shampoo while still removing excess natural oils. Famed NYC stylist Shaun Surething also suggests using a weekly hair conditioning mask and putting coconut oil or a thick conditioner on the ends of bleached or colored hair before getting in the water to protect your color from salt and chlorine.

Avoid Heat
The chemical process of bleaching your hair makes your hair very fragile. Applying too much heat can cause hair to melt and break off. After washing it’s best to pat excess water from your hair with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt and let it air dry. If you absolutely must use heat to achieve a certain style apply a generous amount of a heat-protectant styling product before using heated styling tools to guard your hair from thermal damage.
