Hair Loss and Hormones

When you hear the term hair loss, the first thing that pops in your mind is a balding man, right? Hair loss is usually associated with men as it affects 50% of them by the age of 50. Although it affects a smaller population, women experience it as well and it can be much more traumatic in their lives. A women’s hair is vital to how they view themselves and their standard of beauty. There are many reasons why women lose their hair and many times it comes down to hormones.

Hair can tell you a lot about a person, including their general health and how they take care of themselves. When your body changes or goes through a stressful event it can change production of certain hormones and chemicals that can stunt hair growth or make it fall out altogether. The conditions and prescriptions listed below can result in your hair thinning or falling out.

· Menopause
· Pregnancy
· Stress
· Medication/ The Pill

All four of these cause hormonal changes in the body.

Menopause can cause hair loss because during this time in a woman’s life, her estrogen levels decrease and cannot balance the dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a male hormone that can cause hair loss.

Pregnancy causes many changes in a woman’s body hormonally. For some women, pregnancy as well as childbirth can affect the health of their hair and induce hair loss. Postpartum hair loss is normal for mothers and the hair will typically grow back within several months. If it doesn't, contact New England Associates for help!

Stress is another part of life that affects a person’s mind and body. Stress can make people say and do crazy things! It causes more adrenaline than usual to be released into the body which leads to more DHT in the body.

Lastly, being on certain medication especially birth control can lead to hair loss for women. Birth control pills can contain high levels of hormones that not only change the female cycle, they can also affect the health of your hair.
