Fortunately, modern science has revolutionized the way
clinics perform hair transplants, no longer relying on the traditional cornrow
method that would leave a patient with “pluggy”, unnatural looking results. So YES, they really can work. Currently, a hair transplant can be performed by harvesting DHT (or Dihydrotestosterone) resistant hair from the back of one’s scalp and then
transferring it to areas of thinning or damaged hair or balding areas. This
DHT-resistant hair is genetically programmed to continue growing in the
recipient area even in the worst cases of male pattern baldness, with the
exception of men who suffer from diffuse pattern baldness. Men with diffuse
pattern baldness are recommended an alternative hair loss solution such as

There are a few additional factors that increase the
success of a hair transplant. One of these factors is hair density. Patients
with naturally more dense hair will see more promising initial results. Hair
density is the number of hair follicles you have per square centimeter of
scalp. Scalp laxity is the looseness and flexibility of the scalp. More grafts
of hair can be transplanted when the patient has both a high hair density and
high scalp laxity.
The direction of hair grafts also affects your
visual coverage. Coarser hair is bulkier and can be transplanted using a
smaller number of grafts since it provides more coverage of the scalp. Fine
hair has less body and can provide a very natural look but less coverage than
coarse hair. Wavy and curly hair lends itself to great visual results during
transplantation because a single wavy or curly hair can cover more area of the
scalp than a straight hair. In addition, curly hair rises from the scalp and
holds it shape resulting in greater coverage. Many people with various types of
