International No Pulling Week
October 1-7, 2014 is ”International No Pulling Week”. The purpose is to raise
awareness about “trichotillomania” and the help available for it.
Trichotillomania (TTM) is a disorder that causes people to
have overwhelming urges to pull or twist their hair out from their own scalp,
eyelashes, eyebrows, pubic area, underarms, beard, chest, legs or other parts
of the body.
It is estimated that around 110 million people suffer
from it around the world. It can affect anyone although some statistics show
that the majority of sufferers are female and the age it begins is between 9 and
13 years-old.
For some sufferers, at times it can be somewhat mild and calmed
with some extra awareness and concentration. For other people, the urge may be
so strong that it results in noticeable bald patches and at times makes it
difficult to think about anything else.
TTM is often triggered by depression or stress. Studies have
shown that many sufferers are intelligent, attractive, and sensitive. It can be
developed as a form of release and many people are not aware that they are doing
it until it is too late.
A common time to experience hair-pulling is while lying in
bed trying to fall asleep. Some sufferers have also been observed pulling their
hair out while they are sleeping.
Medical complications of TTM include permanent loss of hair,
infection, and even ingestion of hair which can create a gastrointestinal obstruction.
If you feel that you may be suffering the effects of TTM,
you can contact an expert who
has been specifically trained in hair loss. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a
physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify your symptoms and help you review the
possible solutions.
