The Difference Between Male and
Female Hair Loss
Both men and
women experience hair loss, but they tend to experience hair loss in different
ways. Men with male pattern baldness usually start to see signs of loss when
their hairline starts to recede. Women with female pattern baldness start to
notice the signs of hair loss when their hair starts to thin on top.
Because men
and women usually have different forms of hair loss, hair loss specialists will
use different scales to see just how advanced the hair loss really is.
Men use the
Hamilton-Norwood Scale. This scale, first created in the 1950s, shows the many
stages of hair loss in which a man can have. Most of the hair loss images display
a receding hair line and thinning hair around the crown of the head as shown
below.
Women use
the Ludwig scale to check their stage of hair loss. Most of the images show thinning
and balding of hair down the center of the head where the hair parts down the
middle.
