Hair Loss Treatments for Women

At New England Associates® we offer personalized hair loss treatments for your particular needs. After undergoing your free hair and scalp analysis, we offer three treatment options for our clients to choose from, including HairStart® Laser Hair Therapy™, Micro-Surgical Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation and Hair Grafting for Women.

HairStart® Laser Hair Therapy™ is used to slow the hair loss process and help with the appearance of thinning hair for women. This type of hair loss treatment is best utilized if you are in the early to middle stages of hair loss.

Micro-Surgical Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation, if performed by one of the physicians at NEA, is possibly the most effective procedure you can choose for severe hair loss. This procedure transplants thousands of hair follicles to create natural-looking growing hair.

Hair Grafting for Women is a non-surgical procedure that helps women get fuller, thicker hair. Subtle changes are made each session to provide a less noticeable and natural look.

Donate Your Long Hair

Do you have long hair that you are thinking about cutting off? You can put it to good use and donate it to a worthy cause. There are several charitable organizations that can use your discarded locks to help make hair available for children and women who have lost their own hair due to medical reasons such as cancer.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths makes wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer. They require ponytails that are at least 8 inches long and are not dyed, bleached, or chemically treated.

Children with Hair Loss makes hair available to children and young adults under 21 years-old who have medically-related hair loss. They require ponytails or braids that are at least 8 inches long and preferably not chemically treated.

Locks of Love makes wigs for financially-disadvantaged children and young adults under the age of 21 who suffer from any long-term medical hair loss. They require ponytails or braids that are at least 10 inches long and not bleached or highlighted.

Childhood Leukemia Foundation offers wigs to children with cancer. They require ponytails or braids that are at least 10 inches long and are not colored or chemically damaged.

Wigs for Kids makes wigs for children and teens under 18 years of age who have lost their hair due to medical reasons. They require ponytails or braids that are at least 12 inches long and are not dyed, bleached, or highlighted.

"New England Associates®, it’s owners, directors and employees, do not own and are not affiliated with the charitable organizations listed here in any way. Donors are advised to perform due diligence in choosing any charitable organization.”

Hair Styling Without Damage

There are some simple changes that you can make to your hair care to help prevent breakage which can eventually lead to hair loss. How you style your hair can cause it to look brittle, frizzy, dull, or even fall out. You can follow these dermatologist tips to help style your hair without causing damage:

• Dry your hair by wrapping it in a towel or letting it air-dry. By decreasing the amount of times that you blow-dry your hair each week, you can help limit damage.

• In most cases people should handle wet hair as little as possible; because wet hair breaks more easily when it is combed or brushed, hair should partially air-dry before styling. However, if you have tightly-curled or textured hair, you should brush your hair when it is wet.

• Limit the use of a comb to apply styling products throughout your hair. This can cause hair to break and can lead to hair loss over time.

• Don’t brush your hair too much. One hundred strokes each day can cause split ends.

• Excessive heat can damage your hair so if you use a curling iron, leave it in place for only a second or two and if you use a flat iron, use it on dry hair on a low heat setting no more than every other day.

• Do not wear braids, cornrows, ponytails, or hair extensions for a period of time. These pull on the hair and can cause tension (“traction alopecia”) that leads to breakage and hair loss.

If you fear that you may have any damage from improper styling, you can contact an expert who has been specifically trained in hair care. The professionals at New England Associates® can perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp. If you are interested in discussing this with an expert, contact New England Associates® today. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss, and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation, private hair loss consultation.

The Difference Between Male and Female Hair Loss

Both men and women experience hair loss, but they tend to experience hair loss in different ways. Men with male pattern baldness usually start to see signs of loss when their hairline starts to recede. Women with female pattern baldness start to notice the signs of hair loss when their hair starts to thin on top.

Because men and women usually have different forms of hair loss, hair loss specialists will use different scales to see just how advanced the hair loss really is.

Men use the Hamilton-Norwood Scale. This scale, first created in the 1950s, shows the many stages of hair loss in which a man can have. Most of the hair loss images display a receding hair line and thinning hair around the crown of the head as shown below.

Women use the Ludwig scale to check their stage of hair loss. Most of the images show thinning and balding of hair down the center of the head where the hair parts down the middle.

At New England Associates, we understand the stress accompanied by hair loss. Visit www.HairStart.com to obtain a better understanding of the differences between male and female hair loss or to schedule a FREE hair and scalp analysis.
