Winter Hair Care

We recently wrote about some Secrets to Healthy Hair in Winter, but since this particular winter has been especially harsh in New England and temperatures changes can be an enemy of our hair, here is some additional information about winter hair care.

Winter weather can lead to things like static electricity, split ends, dry frizz, and hat-head. Some of these can last the entire season partly because people generally don't do much to protect their hair from them. Snow, rain, and icy cold can make hair brittle and dry. For skiers, winter sun exposure along with blustery winter wind on the slopes, can snarl hair. Even if you stay indoors all winter, dry indoor heating could be just as damaging as using a blow dryer, which should be very limited in the winter.

Thankfully you can take steps to both protect and replenish your hair’s health. Among the things that can help is regular use of a moisturizing conditioner or a conditioner containing vitamins and minerals necessary for good hair health. Experts suggest avoiding hair care products with a high alcohol content because they can dry your hair in the winter so it is important to be aware of what you are putting on your hair.

People with thick or curly or oily or African-American hair should try not to use conditioner directly on the scalp but instead apply it an inch or two away and work it through to the ends of the hair.
People with thin, fine, flyaway hair may want to avoid a heavy conditioner and use a regular conditioner along with a light conditioning leave-in spray.

Choosing the right shampoo is important because it impacts how hair will behave. In general, shampoos that don’t have lots of filler or unnecessary cosmetic additives are better all year long and a gentle shampoo is especially good in times of climatic extremes. People who color or highlight their hair may want to give it a rest in the dry winter heat to avoid undue stress on the follicles.
You should read what we’ve written about winter hats and cover your head when outdoors in the winter. If static cling and static electricity are an issue even without a hat on, you can try lightly rubbing a clothes dryer sheet on your hair to remove the static.

If your hair appears to be shedding more than normal or if it remains too dry and brittle after taking the proper steps to keep it healthy, you may want to consider seeing a specialist for a hair and scalp examination to be sure that there will not be any permanent problems. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform such an exam and identify the cause of any symptoms and help you review your options and solutions.

Habits That May Be Causing Your Hair Loss

Throughout the day, we sometimes see pieces of hair stuck to our clothes or on our desks but how can you know if this is normal or a sign of something worse - hair loss. According to the American academy of dermatology, an average person loses about 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. If you are losing more than that, it’s possible that your habits are to blame.

Your Hairstyle
Constantly putting your hair into tight braids, ponytails, or buns can cause serious damage to your roots. Wearing your hair up occasionally will not hurt but over many years these hairstyles can cause hair follicle damage known as traction alopecia. Let your hair hang free of accessories and if you are going to tie up your hair use fabric hair ties rather than those painful rubber bands.

Stressed Out
Stress is often a daily occurrence but recent studies have shown that extreme stress can cause changes to your hair cycle. Hair loss can often occur six weeks to three months after an extremely stressful event such as divorce or life altering occurrence. Try to better manage your stress by engaging in stress relieving activities, such a hobby, exercising, or a relaxing massage.

Brushing Wet Hair
Your hair is weakest and most vulnerable to breakage when it is wet. To avoid any unnecessary hair damage try not to brush your hair until it is completely dry. If you absolutely cannot wait for it to dry, use a comb instead of a brush and be very gentle.

Over Drying Your Hair
Using too much heat can cause just as much damage as brushing wet hair. High heat from blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons can lead to breakage, which makes hair more susceptible to falling out. Try to air dry your hair as much as possible.

Eating the Wrong Foods
What you eat is just as important to your hair's health as it is to your overall health. Getting enough protein, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin D all help contribute to your hair's health. Make sure you are getting enough of these daily vitamins but don’t take too much because an excessive amount of vitamin A is also known to contribute to hair loss.

If you don’t think any of your habits are the cause of your hair loss come to New England Associates® will help you diagnose the cause of your hair loss problem and help you find a treatment program that’s tailored to individual needs.

Secrets to Healthy Hair in Winter

Winter weather isn't only harsh on homes and vehicles and landscapes, it can be harsh on hair as well.

During the dry winter months, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends spacing out chemical treatments longer than usual to help prevent damage to your hair.

How often you wash your hair in the winter should depend on how much oil is produced by your scalp; if your scalp and/or hair is oily, you may need to wash your hair more often to keep your scalp clean. No matter what, after washing your hair it is important to use a conditioner that is specific to your hair type to make your hair stronger. Conditioner will also help decrease static electricity in the dry winter months.

Take it easy when brushing your hair, especially if it’s wet. Use wide smooth prongs to stroke through your hair when it is damp, but not wet because hair is more fragile and delicate in this state.

Diet is also important to your hair’s health. If your diet restricts certain types of food or food groups, it may affect your hair. Supplements can help resolve this and replace nutrition that is missing. Iron, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A are very important as well as an H vitamin which helps hair and nails.

If you feel that your hair is lacking its usual bounce and luster compared to other times of the year, or if it seems like you may be experiencing more shedding than normal, the best thing to do is contact an expert who has been specifically trained in issues such as hair loss. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify the cause of any symptoms and help you review your options and solutions.

Choosing Laser Hair Therapy

Losing your hair can be difficult but learning about your treatment options should not be. Laser Hair Therapy has become an increasingly popular non-invasive procedure for both men and women looking to stop their hair loss and re-grow their own hair.

Does Laser Hair Therapy Work for Everyone?

Like any hair restoration treatment, the effects of laser hair therapy will vary depending on the individual. However, unlike many other treatments the laser hair therapy's energy works on all areas of the scalp: front, top, back, and sides. This specific procedure is typically recommended for men and women who are in the early stages of hair loss or whose hair follicles show signs that they may be restored through a laser therapy program.

How Do Laser Hair Therapy Treatments Work?

Hair growth is a natural cycle your hair will grow for several years and then eventually falls out. After some time the roots will then re-grow new hair but as we age certain people’s hair will either thin out or fewer hairs will replace the one that are shed. Laser light therapy helps to strengthen and regenerate those hair roots. Once a hair root dies nothing can be done to restore it so seek help as soon as possible to increase your chances for the best results.

What are the Benefits?

  •  Slow or stop excessive hair loss
  • Increase blood flow to the scalp by 54% after only one treatment.
  •  Relieve irritating scalp conditions
  • Stimulate hair follicle
  • Increase the shine, body and elasticity of hair

The options are many - the choices are yours. Hair loss is not something we choose but gaining hair is. There are many procedures available today that can help you gain the look you want - some are medical but many are not. Which process is right for you? Let's find out now and put the problems of hair loss behind you, once and for all. http://HairStart.com/
