Hair Loss in New Mothers

A lot of new mothers notice some hair loss after having their baby. This is normal and it may not be a permanent condition. It may be a case of shedding caused by lowered estrogen levels and sometimes does not require anything to fix it. Shedding is often at its worst about four months after giving birth. If it lasts longer than that or if it becomes excessive, a hair loss specialist should be consulted with to be sure there will not be any long-term effects which may become more difficult to solve as time passes by. Also, because hair loss can be the result of many factors, it's important to be sure of what is causing the loss.

Here are some tips that can help your hair look a little fuller for those first few months after childbirth:

  • Use a volumizing shampoo that contains ingredients such as protein which coats the hair and makes it appear fuller.
  • Avoid shampoos labeled “conditioning shampoo” as they may contain heavy conditioners that weigh down the hair.
  • Avoid conditioners labeled “intensive conditioners” because these too are heavy on the hair.
  • Use conditioners for "fine" hair because these are lighter on the hair.
  • Use conditioner primarily on the ends of your hair to keep from weighing it down.

Finding the best shampoo and conditioner for you is often going to be trial and error. At New England Associates®, we have created a line of such products based on our 32+ years of experience in helping people with their hair. Shop for our products at http://newenglandassociates.com/cubecart/search.html?_a=category&search%5Bkeywords%5D=conditioner+shampoo&sort%5Bprice%5D=ASC&page=all.

In addition to trying different shampoos and conditioners, you can also try a new hairstyle which can help make your hair look a little fuller. Many new mothers prefer short hair because a shorter style can make hair appear fuller and it can be easier to manage after having a baby. An experienced hair stylist can tell you what hairstyles may work for you or you can contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our stylists who specialize in thinning hair.
