Hair Loss: Can it Happen Everywhere?

Hair loss is a common condition that can affect men, women, and even children. There are a variety of causes for hair loss, some more difficult to diagnose than others, including auto immune diseases, hormonal imbalances and changes, excessive lack of vitamins, among many more. These factors contribute to hair loss along the scalp region, but what about the rest of the hair on our bodies? Can hair loss occur elsewhere?

Hair loss can in fact occur on our arms and legs. Livestrong.com lists several causes for the occurrence of hair loss within the arm and leg regions of the human body. Let’s take a look.

1. Skin Conditions
Dermatitis, Psoriasis and Keratosis Pilaris are a few of the skin conditions that can cause hair loss on the arms and legs. Dermatitis usually involves an itchy rash on swollen, reddened skin. Psoriasis occurs from immune cells that attack healthy skin. Keratosis Pilaris is inflammation of the skin hair follicles.

2. The use of Steroids
It is no surprise that steroid use can have numerous negative effects on the human body, one of those effects is widespread hair loss. Steroids that contain massive quantities of testosterone are much more likely to cause hair loss on the arms and legs.

3. Physiological Disorders
Alopecia Universalis is a medical condition involving rapid loss of all hair, this includes hair loss occurring on the arms, legs, eyebrows and eyelashes, as well as the scalp.

4. Medication
Chemotherapy drugs are some of the most common causes for hair loss throughout the body. However, there are also several other medications that can cause hair loss on the body’s limbs: These are medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Parkinson’s and arthritis.

5. Lifestyle
Diet and stress are lead causes for hair loss occurring on the scalp, as well as on the arms and legs. When the body is starved of sleep, vitamins and other necessary minerals and nutrients, hair loss, among many other negative consequences, can occur.

The Movember Foundation

When our razors look brand new for weeks and our shaving cream cans collect dust in our bathrooms, it can only mean one thing, it’s “Movember.” Since 2003, the Movember Foundation has been committed to raising awareness and funds for men’s health.

From 30 guys back in 2003 to the 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas there are today. The movember foundation has raised over $650 million dollars and funded over 1,000 programs that focus on some of the biggest health issues faced by men such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

1. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men in the US.
2. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15-34 in the US.
3. Around 1 in 4 adults in the US will experience a mental health problem in a given year.
4. Around half (53.8%) of American men meet the federal guidelines for physical activity.

To tackle these issues the movember foundation has established their Global Action Plan (GAP), which connects clinicians and researchers from around the world to accelerate health outcomes for men living with prostate and testicular cancer. In 2013, they invested in mental health programs by partnering with the US to develop and implement actionable, community-level prevention plans to improve mental health for men and boys. By 2015 men’s physical health became their newest focus and they began investing in initiatives that encourage physical activity and raises awareness on the dangers of physical inactivity.

As movember approaches decide how you want to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. Make your move by taking this year’s MOVE challenge or make a statement with your mustache. No matter what you choose to do remember that the movember foundation wouldn’t be where it is without the enthusiasm of all you.

Just like the millions of people helped by the Movember Foundation, New England Associates has been helping people look and feel their best since 1982. At NEA, you will find every successful method that effectively stops hair loss and repairs, replaces, restores or re-grows lost hair. If you're interested in improving your hair's appearance contact New England Associates today to request your FREE microscopic hair and scalp examination.

Hair Loss in Women: Why Me?

Thinning hair and hair loss are never fun topics for discussion, but with nearly 40% of women in the U.S. suffering from thinning hair it's a topic worth talking about. According to Body Logic MD, it's estimated that 1 in 5 women suffer from hair loss. There are many different reasons for hair loss or thinning hair, some of them may be preventable and some may need additional treatment. However, regardless of what your situation may be, New England Associates offers many procedures that can help you look as good as you feel. Let's take a look at some of the reasons for hair loss in women.

1. Hormones:
Hair loss in women can be heavily attributed to the imbalance of hormones. Things like menopause, thyroid problems, and genetic hormonal responses to autoimmune conditions are some of the factors that can become great contributors to hair loss in women.

2. Stress:
Is there a mid-term exam coming up? Are you running behind on an important project at work? Do the bills keep piling up? everyday stressors can be the cause of many human-related health issues, and unfortunately hair loss falls under that same umbrella. Stress can lead to an increase in the hormone cortisol. This hormone creates an increase of adrenaline and testosterone, and may lead to hair loss in women.

3. Birth Control:
It's no surprise that pharmaceuticals may lead to hair loss in both men and women, but birth control has one of the worst reputations for contributing to such loss. More information on the effects of hair loss in women related to birth control can be found at The American Hair Loss Association (AHLA): www.americanhairloss.org

4. Too Much Hair Care:
Putting your hair through too much stress may also encourage hair loss in women. Styling tools and methods such as hair coloring, straightening, curling, brushing, blow-drying, amongst many other techniques can severely damage one's hair, and scalp. It's also very important to read the ingredients in your shampoo and conditioner before use— many commercial shampoos/conditioners use harsh chemicals which in-turn destroy your lovely locks. Instead, try one of NEA's FDA approved products for daily washing!

At NEA, we offer several procedures, both medical and non-medical to assist you in the process towards hair restoration. Together we can fight hair loss and thinning hair with our FDA approved methods and products. Whether you need a hair transplant, or just hair care products of a higher quality, NEA can help you to look as good as you feel! Schedule your FREE Hair and Scalp Analysis today with one of NEA's hair loss experts at HairStart.com or call 1-866-424-7782 (HairStart).

The Different Types of Alopecia

It is normal to lose up to 50-100 strands of hair per day, and overtime you may notice some thinning with age, but what if you started losing chunks of hair everyday faster than they could grow back? A precise answer to this question can only be given by a physician or hair loss expert, but it's likely you could be suffering from a common condition called alopecia.

There are many types of alopecia: Alopecia Totalis, Alopecia Universalis, Androgenetic Alopecia, Alopecia Areata, etc. The word Alopecia sounds complicated but it’s simply the medical term for “hair loss”. We’ve comprised some info on each type to talk about them in a little more depth. Shall we?

Image

1. Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA): This is the most common type of alopecia and it’s also called male or female pattern hair loss. The main causes of this type of hair loss are genetics (family history) and hormones.

2. Alopecia Areata (AA): This type of alopecia is the result of an autoimmune condition and it leaves patchy traces behind, being either a single bald spot or several throughout the scalp.

3. Alopecia Totalis (AT): This alopecia is a more advanced form of Alopecia Areata and instead of patchy hair loss, it causes total hair loss on the scalp.

4. Alopecia Universalis (AU): This type is the most advanced type of Alopecia Areata and it causes total hair loss on the body, including eyebrows and eyelashes.

5. Alopecia Barbae: Also a branch of Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Barbae is located on the beard. It also can leave one single bald spot or multiples.

6. Traction Alopecia: This type of alopecia happens due to excessive pulling or tension in the hair strands. It is seen mainly on women since it results from certain hair styles or by the excessive use of hair extensions.

7. Scarring Alopecia: This type of alopecia is permanent, so the patient is permanently suffering with hair loss. It’s caused by a group of rare disorders.

If you suspect you might be suffering from alopecia, contact New England Associates for a complimentary consultation. No matter what type of alopecia you might have or the extension of if, New England Associates offers alternatives and develops individual treatments focused on the patient’s needs. Arrange your FREE microscopic hair and scalp examination today here or call us at 1-866-424-7782.

Hair Replacement Solutions at NEA

Are you searching for a solution to your hair loss but don’t want to undergo surgery? New England Associates is proud to offer non-surgical hair replacement solutions. We offer nothing but the latest technology available including Hair-Grafting and Laser Hair Therapy. Let’s find out if you're a candidate for one of these two non-surgical options.

Hair-Grafting
Hair-Grafting is a non-surgical procedure that grafts real human hair directly to your scalp. The secret behind this method is the dermal-to-dermis infusion. The good news about this procedure is that it’s effective, fast, and most important, it’s PAINLESS! You can start seeing results after your first application appointment and Hair-Grafting will give you longer, thicker, and fuller hair so you can style it the way you’d like.

While working together with the nation’s top professionals, New England Associates has developed and perfected Hair-Grafting making it one of the best hair replacement procedures available.

Laser Hair Therapy
Laser Hair Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses low level laser, also known as “cold laser”. This type of laser delivers a nourishing light to the scalp and follicles, and helps in increasing blood circulation in that particular area and energizing hair. Together with the increase in blood circulation in the scalp, comes the increase in the deliver of oxygen and vital nutrients, which strengthen existing hair follicles, leading to a healthier hair.

Some of the benefits of LHT is that LHT may:

  • Stimulate hair follicle.
  • Slow or stops excessive hair loss.
  • Relieve irritating scalp conditions.
  • Repair and improves hair shaft quality.
  • Enhance the lasting effects of hair color and perms by closing the hair cuticle.

At New England Associates we utilize low level lasers in our treatment to make sure you achieve the best result possible. Laser Hair Therapy is recommended for both men and women that are experiencing the early stages of hair loss and that have enough hair follicles to be rehabilitated by our treatment.

New England Associates is proud to offer these two non-surgical hair replacement treatments as a solution to your hair loss problems. If you’re not sure these are the best fit for you, our hair loss specialists can help you by answering questions and diagnosing the cause of your hair loss. Call us at 1-866-HairStart (1-866-424-7782) or visit here to schedule your no-cost/no-obligation microscopic hair & scalp exam.

The Hair Life Cycle

Each individual hair strand goes through different phases that constitute the hair’s growth cycle. As one strand may be in its first phase, another may be in its last phase. And that’s what makes life beautiful: change. So, what kind of life does our hair live...Keep reading to find out!

Like previously stated, each hair grows at its own pace. Each strand has a follicle, or root, and these follicles receive blood and oxygen from blood vessels that nourish the hair, allowing it to grow healthy. There are four phases in the life cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen, and Exogen.

This phase lasts between two to seven years and it’s what determines the hair’s length. What happens here is that cells divide themselves in the follicles producing new cells, which makes the hair grow since new cells are being pushed toward the surface.

Hair Life Cycle

On this phase, the hair growth slows down and eventually stops. The hair retracts from the follicle and moves up. The stop in growth shows that the hair strand died. This phase lasts for about 10 days.

This phase constitutes of the follicles’ inactivity, which lasts for about three months. The hair strand is ready to fall out when it has moved up enough to the surface of the root.

This is the last phase that the hair strand goes through, which is where it sheds and gives space for another hair strand to start growing from that follicle.

On average, there are 100 to 150 thousand hair follicles in one’s head. It is completely normal to lose 50 to 100 hair strands per day. If you notice you’re losing an excessive amount of hair per day, you should contact your doctor. Hair loss can be caused both because of genetics or other triggering factors such as poor diet, stress, medical conditions and medications. The earlier the diagnosis, the greater the chances of effectiveness of hair restoration.

If you’re suffering from hair loss or thinning hair, do not hesitate on contacting us for your FREE, no-obligation microscopic hair & scalp exam to diagnose the cause of your hair loss problem. Call us at 1-866-HairStart (1-866-424-7782) or visit http://hairstart.com/contact_us.htm
