How to Treat Women’s Hair Loss

Some hair loss in women is caused by changing hormones or other health issues. However, those who don’t suffer from health-related hair loss may be caught off guard when they begin to experience hair loss. Approximately 30 million women (one in four) experience hereditary women's hair loss . Typically, a woman's hair is at its thickest by age 20. After age 20 hair gradually begins to thin, shedding more than the normal 40-100 hairs each day. Many women report feeling embarrassed or unattractive when confronting hair loss. If your struggling with hair loss, we at New England Associates want to help you restore your confidence and your hair!

Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) is an FDA approved non-surgical hair restoration treatment that is proven to regrow hair. This quick and effective treatment uses low level red lights to increase blood flow in the scalp to stimulate damaged or weak hair follicles. The result can be longer, thicker, healthier hair and several studies have shown most patients show a visibly noticeable regrowth of hair.

Using herbal Propecia-type products combined with LHT may increase the effectiveness of treatments and strengthens hair to prevent future hair loss. These products provide necessary nutrients vital to having healthy, shiny hair and cleanse the scalp so treatments can further penetrate the follicles. Following a good hair care routine along with these products can regrow and strengthen your hair so you can style your hair without fear of bald spots showing.

Good hair nutrition is vital for healthy hair! Eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water is a great way to internally treat dead, damaged hair. Taking a daily hair vitamin is also a great way to boost your hair’s health. HairStart® Essentials™ contains 11 DHT-opposing ingredients from affecting multiple hair concerns. Unlike some other marketed hair products and internal treatments, Essentials™ has no known side effects and is safe for both men and women of all ethnicities.  New England Associates® offers procedures, products and devices that are specifically designed to assist women with damaged, fine, thinning or balding hair concerns. Our hair replacement solutions are completely natural-looking and are able to be styled to your desired length and color. You might also be a candidate for hair transplantation. Finally, our line of pharmaceutical-grade products are specifically designed to strengthen hair and regrow thinning locks. Contact us today to schedule your FREE private hair and scalp evaluation and find out how you can achieve full shiny hair again!

Losing More Hair than Usual? Find Out Why

School is out, the sun is out, and… your hair is falling out? As you wash the sand from your hair or brush out those beach curls you may find yourself pulling a few extra strands out of your brush (and your drain). Don’t panic. A new British Journal of Dermatology study suggests that shedding more strands in the summer and fall is totally normal. Dr. Shawn Kwatra, assistant professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, speculates to Health Magazine that, “from an evolutionary perspective one of the roles of hair loss is to provide warmth. This would be less necessary during the summer months.” Daily hair loss is normal especially during warm-weather months. The American Academy of Dermatologists says it’s normal to lose between 50-100 hairs a day. Our hair goes through phases of growth over a few weeks. During the resting phase (telogen) hair is more prone to shedding and falling out. “When hair is subjected to more extreme weather, as much as 70 percent of strands can prematurely enter this resting phase,” says hair restoration expert Dr. Robert Dorin.

The high temperatures and dry air typically seen during the summer can be especially harsh to hair making the telogen phase come around quicker. This is why you may see more hair fall during the warmer seasons. So seasonal hair loss is no reason for alarm. Especially, since hair regrowth happens simultaneously with hair loss. However, the findings of researches at John Hopkins is relevant to doctors whose patients complain of hair loss during those seasons and can be useful in evaluating the effectiveness of certain therapies at treating hair loss. Health Magazine states that, “40% of Americans suffer from unwanted hair shedding, and many women as well as men will notice an increase in hair loss as they get older.”

So how can you differentiate seasonal hair loss from male or female pattern baldness?  “If you notice hair falling out in a pattern—balding near temples or crown of the head, for example,” Dr. Dorin says. “Or if you notice severe thinning or balding in general.”

The sooner you speak with an expert, such as one of New England Associates® hair restoration specialists, the quicker your hair can be repaired with a proven regimen of proper hair nutrition and good scalp hygiene or several surgical or non-medical options.

New England Associates® has been in the business of replacing lost hair since 1982! Utilizing the latest advancements, we’re able to repair, replace and restore lost hair. The Hair Life Cycle

Each individual hair strand goes through different phases that constitute the hair’s growth cycle. As one strand may be in its first phase, another may be in its last phase. And that’s what makes life beautiful: change. So, what kind of life does our hair live...Keep reading to find out!

Like previously stated, each hair grows at its own pace. Each strand has a follicle, or root, and these follicles receive blood and oxygen from blood vessels that nourish the hair, allowing it to grow healthy. There are four phases in the life cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen, and Exogen.

This phase lasts between two to seven years and it’s what determines the hair’s length. What happens here is that cells divide themselves in the follicles producing new cells, which makes the hair grow since new cells are being pushed toward the surface.

Hair Life Cycle

On this phase, the hair growth slows down and eventually stops. The hair retracts from the follicle and moves up. The stop in growth shows that the hair strand died. This phase lasts for about 10 days.

This phase constitutes of the follicles’ inactivity, which lasts for about three months. The hair strand is ready to fall out when it has moved up enough to the surface of the root.

This is the last phase that the hair strand goes through, which is where it sheds and gives space for another hair strand to start growing from that follicle.

On average, there are 100 to 150 thousand hair follicles in one’s head. It is completely normal to lose 50 to 100 hair strands per day. If you notice you’re losing an excessive amount of hair per day, you should contact your doctor. Hair loss can be caused both because of genetics or other triggering factors such as poor diet, stress, medical conditions and medications. The earlier the diagnosis, the greater the chances of effectiveness of hair restoration.

Feed Your Follicles For Optimum Hair Health

Image

When people hear the words “hair loss,” many link such loss to a genetic factor or skin disease such as alopecia. But, what many people don't realize is that some cases of hair loss may be due to rapid weight loss, hormonal imbalances, menopause, pregnancy, certain medications, chemotherapy, chronic stress, poor scalp circulation and even nutrition.

At New England Associates care about your hair health and understand the affects hair loss can have on your daily life. We recommend speaking to a hair loss expert at NEA to receive an accurate diagnosis of the cause of hair loss, but in the meantime it's important to understand other factors that may influence or stimulate loss. Now, let’s take a look at the list we’ve created for you!

  • a.       Vitamin A: This vitamin promotes the growth of healthy cells and tissues. Also, it is necessary for the body to make sebum, which is an oily substance produced by our hair and it serves as a natural conditioner to keep our scalp and hair hydrated. Add yellow/orange or green colored vegetables or fruits rich in beta-carotene to your diet. These foods produce vitamin A. Take your pick of carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, winter squash, mango, spinach, and broccoli!

  • b.      Vitamin B: B-lieve it or not, this complex vitamin is chock full of the same vitamins that naturally occur in the foods you already consume — giving your body an extra boost of energy. They also aid  in the formation of red blood cells. B vitamins can be found in foods such as pork, poultry, fish, wholegrains, eggs, vegetables, and soy beans.

  • c.       Vitamin C: Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen, which supports hair follicles and strengthens the capillaries that supply the scalp and hair. Vitamin C's antioxidant properties increases iron absorption, allowing iron to be rapidly absorbed and used by the body. Good sources of vitamin C are blueberries, kiwi, oranges, broccoli, sweet potatoes, strawberries, and papaya.

  • d.      Vitamin E: This vitamin has the ability to boost circulation to the scalp and it protects the hair from the damaging effects of the sun. Vitamin E is necessary to nourish the hair and to prevent breakage as it helps the body in producing Keratin, which strengthens the hair. Vitamin C and E protect each other and therefore are more effective when consumed together.  Vitamin E ambassadors include almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, avocados, and kale.

2.      Sulphur - “Nature’s Beauty Mineral”: Sulphur is known as the “nature’s beauty mineral” because it is able to reduce skin inflammation, helps on hair growth and also on blood circulation, which is crucial to a good health. This mineral is abundant in our skin, hair and nails and it is present in all cells in our body. Sulphur also plays an important role in the absorption of several B vitamins, including B5 and B7, which are thought to help aid in hair health. Some symptoms of a lack of sulphur are hair loss, brittle, dry hair and nails, and dry skin. This mineral can only be obtained through diet sources such as protein rich foods, eggs, milk and meat. Our options for vegetarians are garlic, brussels sprouts, seaweed, onions and kale.

3.      Pump Up YourProtein: If you didn’t already know, more than 90 percent of our hair is made of protein. Yes, Protein! Therefore, it’s crucial to pack your diet with plenty of protein for strong, healthy hair. If your diet lacks the protein your body requires, this may cause hair loss. Great protein foods include meats (fish, turkey, chicken, beef), eggs, and dairy products. For vegetarians opt for legumes and nuts.

4.      Make Sure Your Iron Intake is Right: If the iron levels on the body fall below what is required by it to function properly, you are likely to have anemia, which is nothing more than low iron levels in the body. Iron carries oxygen to the hair, and lack of iron means lack of oxygen and that affects the hair’s growth cycle. An affected hair growth cycle may be causing hair loss because you’re loosing more hair than it is being replaced. To remedy the situation, eat animal products such as red meats, chicken, fish, lentils, spinach, broccoli and kale.

5.      Don’t Forget About Copper and Zinc: Did you know that copper can prevent hair loss and it also contributes to hair thickness? Although, only a small amount of copper is required by the body, it is crucial that you consume the right amount of it. Copper is also said to prevent the graying of hair and therefore it intensifies the hair color to make you look even better. But beware; the exaggerated consumption of copper can be toxic, so watch out! Another mineral that works together with copper is zinc. Zinc helps on the production of new cells, including hair cells and the lack of it may cause hair loss and a dry scalp. Note that it’s important to have balance between the consumption of the two minerals; too much zinc interferes in the absorption of copper and too much copper can be toxic, like stated above. A good source of both zinc and copper are black sesame seeds.

6.      Silica Intake: Silica, which is also know as silicon dioxide, was proved in 1939 by Professor Adolf Butenandt that it is essential to human’s skeleton development. Also, silica is thought to stimulate hair growth and prevent baldness. Therefore, silica plays an important role in the human body and helps on the hair’s health. Silica can be obtained through a variety of foods, such as strawberries, asparagus, wheat, rice, beans, cucumber, and potatoes.

7.      Essential Oils: Rosemary oil has been long used because it is known to increase the scalp’s circulation. Also, coconut oil is known for being super nourishing, giving shine and softness to the hair. Add a few drops of rosemary oil to your shampoo or massage your scalp regularly using either rosemary oil or coconut oil.

Remember to consume foods rich in vitamins A, B, C and E. Also make sure your intake of sulphur, protein, iron, zinc and copper are right. Having a balanced diet can solve a thousand problems you may have and save you from some that may come. Your body is your temple, make sure you take care of it!

NEA hopes that these tips can help you maintain healthy, shiny, and voluminous hair so you“Look As Good As You Feel”. If you have tried these tips and your hair loss problem hasn’t been solved, make sure you stop by our clinic in Massachusetts or New Hampshire or schedule your appointment with us. Hair & Scalp and Your Health

There are many medical conditions and prescriptions that can affect our hair, but sometimes what someone might think is a problem, could just be that they need a little help taking care of their hair and/or scalp.

Shedding
Some experts estimate that we may shed a hundred or more hairs a day. Usually this is nothing to be concerned about and it usually does not mean that we are going bald. About 90% of our hair follicles are producing hair at any given time, while the other 10% are in a resting phase. The hair falls out after a few months but then it is normally replaced by new hair, and then the cycle starts all over again. However, certain shocks to our system such as surgery, childbirth, medications, diets, severe stress, and thyroid problems, can push more hair into resting than normal. After a few months of this, people may notice that their hair is falling out and thinning more than it should. This is a condition called “Telogen Effluvium” which is sometimes described as hair "coming out in handfuls." In most cases, new hair will start to grow back to replace the hair that has been lost, but not always. This is when a person should seek a consultation with a trained professional to see what can be done to get that hair to grow back before it becomes a problem

Dandruff
Dandruff appears to be messy and sometimes embarrassing and bothersome to people, but it isn’t contagious and normally isn’t a cause for alarm. There are many theories about how people get it including an overgrowth of a fungus and from risk factors such as oily skin, stress, obesity, cold and dry weather, and Eczema or Psoriasis. To help fight dandruff, try using an anti-dandruff shampoo such as “Mint BlueShampoo” from New England Associates®. If the dandruff flakes are greasy and yellow, it may be from an inflammatory skin condition called “Seborrheic Dermatitis”, which can occur where there are lots of oil glands such as the scalp and the face. Seborrheic Dermatitis can be indicative of a medical condition but it is treated the same as dandruff, although more severe cases may need HairStart® Dexpanthenol™ or a prescription medication. If it seems that there may be some hair loss or shedding occurring from dandruff, contact the hair experts at New England Associates for a free hair and scalp examination to be sure that there isn’t a problem.

Alopecia Areata
“Alopecia Areata” is when someone’s immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair to fall out. This sometimes happens suddenly. Most sufferers will have one or two bald patches, but in some cases all of their body hair falls out. Alopecia Areata isn't harmful or contagious, but it can be very tough to deal with emotionally. Hair may grow back on its own and there are treatments which may help it grow back more quickly. Some people may experience Alopecia Areata more than just once.

Traction Alopecia
Pulling hair too tight with ponytails, braids, cornrows, etc., can damage hair follicles and cause hair to break or fall out. This is known as “Traction Alopecia”. Some hair extensions can also cause it because of the extra weight pulling on existing hair. A different hairstyle can cause less pulling and may let hair grow back, but pulling on hair for a long time can lead to permanent hair loss which can lead to emotional concerns. The hair loss professionals at New England Associates® can assess any damage and provide options to overcome it.

Too Much Styling Hurts Hair
Blow drying, using a flat iron, coloring, bleaching, and over-brushing can all cause damage to the cuticle (the outer layer) of our hair. Although, it doesn't cause any permanent health damage, when the inner core of hair is exposed hair becomes dry and dull.

Premature Gray Hair
Gray hair isn't always related to aging. People under 40 years old who get gray hair probably have it running in their family, although medical conditions such as Anemia, thyroid issues, certain vitamin deficiencies and Vitiligo can cause premature graying. A common solution is to highlight or color hair to cover the gray, but some people are sensitive to such chemicals leading to itching and burning on the scalp, and too much of the chemicals can have the same effects as over styling hair.

Female Hair Loss
Hair loss in women may include thinning hair all over the head, but is usually most common on top of the head. Contrary to some beliefs, longer hair won't necessarily put a strain on the roots of the hair and cause more to fall out. Shampooing shouldn’t pull hair out either, but people notice more of the hair that was falling out already anyway. Minoxidil and HairStart® Essentials™ are among some of the things that can help hair growth and slow the thinning. You can read more facts about women’s hair loss here.

Male Hair Loss
Most hair loss in men is caused through genetics but there are many other causes as well. So-called “Male-Pattern Baldness” often starts with receding hair at the temples, then on the crown leaving a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the sides of the head. Medications to slow typical hair loss in men include Minoxidil and HairStart® Essentials™, which is an herbal alternative to Propecia (finasteride). You can read more facts about men’s hair loss here.

Sun Damage
Too much sun can cause hair to be brittle and split easily. When a person has fine or thinning hair, there is more risk of a sunburn on the scalp (and that can be quite painful!).Here are some tips to help keep hair healthy in the sun and to help minimize summer hair loss.

Hairand Heart-Healthy Diet
Hair needs protein and iron to stay healthy. You can help keep your hair shiny by eating things like salmon and walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids, Brazil nuts for selenium, oysters and cashews for zinc, and spinach and carrots for vitamin A (but not too much vitamin A because that can promote hair loss in some cases). All of these foods help maintain good scalp and hair health and they are also good for your heart. Very low-calorie diets can be bad for hair because they lack sufficient nutrients and can leave hair dull and limp, as well as stunt hair growth or even cause hair loss. HairStart® Vitamin Plus Conditioning Treatment and HairStart® vitamins can help restore nutrients to the hair, especially when used under the direction of the professionals at New England Associates®,who can help identify problems and offer solutions.

Scalp Massage
There's no medical proof that a scalp massage will affect hair loss or improve any scalp conditions, but it can help to relieve stress and tension because the scalp is covered with nerve endings that make it sensitive to touch. Scalp massages may also trigger the release of “feel-good hormones” like dopamine and serotonin.

If you are interested in discussing more with an expert, contact New England Associates® today. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.

Keep in mind, if you’re experiencing symptoms associated hair loss, you should not diagnose yourself. The best thing to do is contact an expert who has been specifically trained in hair loss. The professionals at New England Associates® will provide a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify the cause of your symptoms and help you review your options and solutions.

Simple and Easy Tips to Grow Longer Hair Faster

Did you cut off your hair and now you want it back? Not to worry, there are many naturally simple ways to get your hair to grow back faster. Here are 4 tips and tricks that you can do to not only get longer hair but to get healthier longer hair.

Tip 1: Drink plenty of water.
Drinking plenty of water is essential to our body so it can function properly. It is also essential to our hair. Our hair needs to be hydrated on a regularly basis. Not only does have drinking water make your hair grow faster, it adds shine and strength to it as well. It is recommend for one to drink 8 glasses of water a day to ensure that your hair and body is getting the hydration it needs.

Tip 2: Trimming is a must.

Getting your hair trimmed may seem pointless when you are trying to grow your hair out because they take length off. But it isn’t. Getting your hair trimmed means that the stylists will just cut off the split ends and the damaged hair. Normally 1 inch is all that need to be cut. By doing this your hair will grow even faster. When your hair has split ends it stops growing making it harder for you to get the length you want. So if you want that long luxurious hair you better get your hair trimmed at least every 6-8 weeks.
