How Marital Status, Smoking and Drinking May Affect Hair Loss in Women

Image

Did you know that women who are divorced or widowed have been shown to experience more hair loss than those who are married?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons conducted studies several years ago involving identical twins which concluded that factors such as marital status, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption were the strongest predictors of hair loss in women. It was shown that the twin who was divorced or widowed had more hair loss than the twin who remained married.

The results were a different story in men as genetics beat out other factors such as smoking, heavy sun exposure, a history of dandruff, hypertension, lack of regular exercise, and elevated testosterone levels.

Smoking and Your Hair

Many people who smoke cigarettes make a New Year’s resolution to quit around this time of the year.

Most people are aware of many of the health dangers of smoking, but not everybody is aware of the toll that smoking takes on their hair. Health officials have done laboratory experiments which proved that after three months of exposure, most mice developed areas of alopecia and grey hair compared to mice that were not exposed.

We wrote more about smoking and hair loss last winter but something else to consider is the emotional and psychological impact of hair loss and balding. There are lots of reasons why people could lose hair and quitting smoking would help eliminate one of those reasons, which could help people feel better about themselves and perhaps help lead them to some other common New Year’s resolutions of exercising and going to the gym.

If you are a former smoker and are concerned about the health of your hair now that you've quit, we can help. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify any problems and help you review your options and solutions.
