Smoking and Your Hair

Many people who smoke cigarettes make a New Year’s resolution to quit around this time of the year.

Most people are aware of many of the health dangers of smoking, but not everybody is aware of the toll that smoking takes on their hair. Health officials have done laboratory experiments which proved that after three months of exposure, most mice developed areas of alopecia and grey hair compared to mice that were not exposed.

We wrote more about smoking and hair loss last winter but something else to consider is the emotional and psychological impact of hair loss and balding. There are lots of reasons why people could lose hair and quitting smoking would help eliminate one of those reasons, which could help people feel better about themselves and perhaps help lead them to some other common New Year’s resolutions of exercising and going to the gym.

If you are a former smoker and are concerned about the health of your hair now that you've quit, we can help. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify any problems and help you review your options and solutions.
If you are interested in discussing more with an expert, contact New England Associates® today. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss, and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.

Does Smoking Cause Hair Loss?

If you’re like most people, you may be looking at your hairline or scalp and attempting to self diagnose your hair loss. What most people don’t realize is that a healthy lifestyle may significantly contribute to the overall health of your body, and that includes your hair.  With all the research over the past few decades, everyone is aware that smoking leads to countless systematic problems with your health so why would your hair be included in this?
The truth is smoking is probably the worst habit anyone could have. If you smoke, you are damaging nearly every organ in your body including your hair. That’s right, smoking not only causes cancer, but it may also cause hair loss too. Smoking may cause hair loss because it reduces the circulation to the extremities, it can cause pollutants in the blood, which affect the liver. And it can also cause minor clogging of the scalp’s pores.
