What Your Hair Color Says About Your Health

Image
Many people believe that our hair color can tell us things about our personalities. However, what many people might not know is what our natural hair color can tell us about our health.

Brunette

Brown hair is the most common naturally occurring hair color, as well as the coarsest and thickest. Although, brunettes pack a punch with thick strands, they often have fewer hairs than any other hair color resulting in a higher risk for hair loss.

What about color? Brunette hair is developed from large amounts of melanin. Melanin protects the skin from UV damage which in turn helps prevent brunettes from developing dangerous skin cancers, such as melanoma. The increased amount of melanin can also makes brunettes more susceptible to nicotine addiction since nicotine is known to build up in tissue containing melanin.

Blonde

The second runner up to the most common naturally occurring hair in the world, Blonde. Despite the many positive traits associated with Blonde hair, such as glamour and attractiveness, blondes are at risk for quite a few health problems. Opposite to that of the brunettes, blonde hair is developed as a result of a lack of melanin. This lack of melanin can have great affects on the skin and eyes, causing blondes to be more susceptible to skin and eye complications. Furthermore, studies have shown that blondes with blue eyes are at an even higher risk for developing ocular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration. This is an eye condition that is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in Americans aged 50 and over. On a positive note this condition can be prevented by using sunglasses to help protect your eyes from prolonged sunlight exposure. This lack of melanin also means that those with blonde hair typically have fair skin which puts blondes at a high risk for developing melanoma. Be sure to wear your sunscreen ladies and gentlemen!

Red

Red hair is the most rarely occurring hair color in the world. A report done by BBC estimates that only one to two percent of the world have natural red hair and most of these people live in Northern Europe. Per Medical Daily, a study has been shown that people with red hair are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease due to a genetic mutation that led to their bright hair color. It’s also said that people with red hair have a higher tolerance for anesthesia but are more sensitive to pain. Just like many blondes, red heads tend to have fair skin which also puts then at a higher risk for developing melanoma. On the plus side, red hair says more about a person than just their health. It's been said that people with red-hair often have increased self-esteem. This is due to the self-fulfilling prophecy that people with red hair are fiery and passionate!

Kim Kardashian Has Gone Platinum..too?

Jared Leto isn’t the only celebrity who went through some big hair changes this week. Kim Kardashian unveiled her new look at the same Paris fashion show as Jared, with her hair the same shade of platinum blond as his.

While it isn't necessarily a bad thing to change your hair color once in a while, times of temperature extremes such as the dead of winter and the dog days of summer may not be the best times of the year for drastic changes because hair is often under stress during these times and hair can be damaged by the harsh chemicals used in the coloring process.

There are a number of other things to consider when changing color, but when done properly by trained professionals, coloring can be relatively safe.

If you suspect that you may have hurt your hair or scalp by coloring in the past, you should contact an expert who has been specifically trained in hair and scalp issues. The professionals at New England Associates® can perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp to identify any problems and help you review your options and solutions. If you are interested in knowing more about this, contact New England Associates® today.

At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair problems, and making the right choice to solve them, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.

OMG! Justin Bieber Dyes Hair Blonde!

There was buzz around the Internet and the celebrity gossip sites about Justin Bieber dying his hair blonde last week. While it isn’t always a bad thing to change your hair color once in a while, here are some things to consider before going forward:

• Hair dyes can cause problems such as burning, itching, redness, or raw scalp skin. Other more severe problems include swelling in the face, trouble breathing, hair damage, and hair loss.

• There are different types of hair dyes. Some are just temporary and will wash out with shampoo while others are more permanent and cannot be washed-out.

• Keep hair dyes out of the reach of children.

• If you have long hair and are considering donating it for charity in the future, be advised that some of the most popular organizations do not accept hair that has been dyed or bleached or otherwise chemically treated.

Here are some ways that you can use hair dye more safely:

• Always follow all directions carefully and pay attention to all cautions and warnings on the labels and instructions.

• Do a test on a small patch on your body before dying your hair. Apply a tiny bit of the dye on an inconspicuous spot and leave it there for two days. If you get a rash, do not use that dye on your hair.

• Do not leave dye on longer than the directions say you should.

• Thoroughly rinse your scalp with water after dyeing.

• Wear gloves when you apply hair dye.

• Don’t mix different hair dye products.

Never dye your eyebrows or eyelashes. The FDA does not allow it because it can hurt your eyes and possibly even make you go blind.

If you are considering a major hair color change like Justin did, here are some things to consider:

• Let a professional do it at a salon.

• Think about your skin tone and eye color and choose a color that will complement and enhance your natural features. Some colors can highlight those features as well as camouflage other features. For example if you have wrinkles and/or circles under your eyes, you should avoid very dark hair colors because those tend to draw attention to shadows and lines in one's face.

• If you're thinking about a major hair color overhaul, you will probably need to change your makeup colors as well. Typically, the lighter the hair color, the lighter the makeup and the darker the hair color, the darker the makeup.

• Consider your emotional status. If you just broke up with someone, or are really angry, upset or sad, lost a loved one, or lost your job, or are going through any kind of traumatic experience, you should really avoid a drastic permanent change. You can always wait until things calm down and try the change at a better time in your life so you don’t regret doing something that you can’t easily fix right now.

• People are going to notice. You should be mentally prepared for comments and feedback which may not always be positive.

• Think about the health of your hair. If your hair is compromised in any way now, coloring could make it worse. A professional should be able to let you know if your hair is healthy and strong enough for a change.
